finally got some flying time in today. the mechanics for the ranger are flying great. atvracer and i spent most of our day jacking with my radio settings. she handles very well, and very scale like. feels very docile. i haven't put 690mm blades on yet. right now they're just 600's but look how long that tail is.

yep. i'll run a flybar for awhile. my long term goal is to go flybarless though. thanks for the use of the tach again. it came in handy today. we tached atv's new trex 700 and i tached the scale mechanics. i'm running 1700 which is about what i want. when i get some 690's i'll retach it. atv offered up a new set of his own 690mm blades today but i couldn't bring myself to fly them. it sucks bad enough crashing my own blades. besides that i have to look him in the eye everyday at work. here's a quick vid of him flying his new 700 for the first time checking her out. i'm not that great on the camera. sorry

I always like the way Atvracer checks out his blade grips on a new heli. Glad to see the stayed in tact.

You gonna let him try a few collective pops like that on your long ranger when you get er done. At least you know the mechanics are secured properly if it stays in one piece.

Glad to hear you are getting some good out of that tach. I am still trying to figure out how to come up with the money for a gasser. Scale still hasn't tickled my fancy yet. Just like building and flying pod and boom too much.

not so sure that would be good for the scale ship i always like building airplanes and flying helis. i loose interest in the planks after they're built though. that's why i like the scale. i get my hand building fix and it's a heli so i don't get tired of flying them. have you looked into the new century 50 size gasser. the radikal. i've got 2 helis i want to get in the next year and that's definately one of them. i did do a few hard collective pops with the scale mechanics today and it does well. that'll change quite a bit when the fuselage is fitted i'm sure but the mechanics are feeling pretty sturdy. can't wait to feel her out with the longer blades. i'm also gonna set her up with a switchglo

hey madness, just hang around the scale forum awhile. the bug will bite eventually. it did me. i'm amazed at some of the things the scale guys come up with to make things look scale. i'm going to use a 2 liter sprite bottle to make the sunroof glass for my ranger. i've seen some amazingly scale looking items on helis that are household items. there is the flying side and then there is the modelling side. that's my opinion anyways.

Well I just bought a A 109 Coast Guard Fuselage for my 450 sport. It has retracts and lights. I know its not he detail you are doing but at least I can give it a try.

Now I just have to figure out how to make the retracts work with a 6 channel rx. I wonder if I really have to have the POT lead for a 401 gyro?

I will send picks when I get it.

POT lead for a 401 gyro?

yes but you could always shair it with it and go from head hold to rate

wow, that was easy to convert you. all in about 2 posts and you buy a scale. i laughed outloud when i read your post. careful you'll get hooked. atv makes a good point about flying in rate. i'm actually thinking about that for my scale ship to get a little smoother look to the flight characteristics of the long ranger. something to think about. nice looking fuselage, my brother is career coast guard. he's the youngest cpt. in the history of the coast guard. he likes when i send him photos of people's cg helis. i can get you some tail numbers for her from him with a little history if you'd like.

Cool deal on the tail numbers.

ATV what do you mean by sharing the channel. How would it work?

By the way I will read it tomorrow, I am going to bed and dreaming about CG helicopters.

ok 401 has 2 modes rate and head hold so you set it up by sharing the 2 gyro and the retracts. use a Y one for the gyro and the other for the retracts servos on head hold with retracts down or up flip the switch retracts go up or down then your in rate mode 65-75% travel should be enough for the retracts if not you can get an onboard servo ATV adjuster (about $10-20) mount it inline with the gyro and use a screwdriver to adjust your rates basically make a 240gyro you can also get a 240 gyro

I think I have made up my mind to buy a AR7000 receiver and not worry about splitting channels. It would make it easier and I need the weight in the front end of the heli.

Thanks for the idea though.

well, i put a few flights in on the mechanics today. it was a great day of flying. i'm going to take the weights off of the flybar. on harder turns i would have to use full stick to bring it on around. other than that the heli is flying great. few more flights and i'll probably start fitting things in the fuselage. the time change will make it difficult to do any flying after work now so it may be next weekend before i can fly her again, weather willing.

doing lots of work tonight. i'll post pics in a sec. it's almost 1 in the morning and i can't quit doing rivets. can anyone say O.C.D.? i've almost got the fuselage ready to shoot the final primer. then i'll sand and it's on to a basecoat. can't wait to see how the rivets come out after a coat of paint. i'm a first timer so you pros chime in if you catch any mistakes. any advice is much appreciated. thanx
Nate

ok, these rivets are driving me crazy. they look great and then i go to the shop the day after and end up redoing some because they flatten out if you touch them at all with the needle. i'm close to finishing but i don't quite have them like i want them yet. i got a lot done last night but nothing really picture worthy. rather boring at this point in the build. just filled a few spots and glued the light on the tail. also got almost all of the wood blocks for mounting screws installed. i took a shot of the real heli from a brochure. here's my goal
