Avant Aurora - EFX - FX > tail servo horn ? and Spartan setup?

My heli's been setup for awhile, but have a question for the experts here .

I had a tail servo go bad, and think it might have been my fault. The servo ball was about 18-19mm out on the horn and that's quite a bit.

So I moved it to a different horn on my new servo now at 14mm out from center. Problem is other day when I went to fly it, I pop it into a hover, and do some fast piros and stops and the tail won't hold on the stop. It will either bounce back 1/4-1/2 turn, OR keep going for 1/4-1/2 turn. Not all the time, most times it does stop properly, but sometimes it lets go. I'm afraid to fly it b/c when tail servo failed before the tail blew out in some moderate backwards flying and I'm still trying to clean the poop spots out of the undies from that one. Scarey for sure not to be able to control the tail. So now I'm kinda wondering about the spartan, OR maybe I need to tweak the gain higher, but I'm already at about 50% T lock on my 12x which is pretty high, so I doubt that's it.

Any tips here? Don't want to wreck my prize heli

What tail servo are you using? I ran a Solid G gyro with a JR8900G and the ball position was at 15-17mm on the servo horn. My gain value at that position was 15. With a Spartan I'd expect the gain to be a little higher.

Knowing your full setup would really help.

Thomas.

I asked around, and with a Spartan/8900G combo on the Aurora with the ball at 19mm gave gain values of about 32% give or take a few points. 50 does sound a bit high to me, but again I'd need to know what tail servo you are using to be sure.

I've used the Spartan w/ 8900G in my Auroras for some time now. With a JR 12x one helis has a t.lock gain of 34%, the other needs 40%. 50% sounds a bit high, servo may not like it for long.

Can't remember how far out the ball is on the servo horn - will check when I get home.

I think I started at 40% but after it went out, I think I upped it a bit.

found the issue.
Wasn't the servo or gyro
ended up replacing both and flew great a few tanks so thought I had it fixed. Then it started to piro out of control during some fast tic tocs and luckily I was able to save it right before impact.

When I got it back to the bench I was looking everything over. Ended up finding the tail could spin independent of the main blades. Something is loose in the TT setup, guessing one of the couplings. Glad I found it now, so fair warning to all who are having odd tail issues, check your TT setup.

I'm glad you found the issue before it resulted in a crash. Make sure you tighten the set screws properly or the coulplers will slip under load.

Gee that was lucky, but how could that happen? its been a while since I assembled mine, aren't they pinned front and back, as in the boom has a hole in it to locate in the pinned boom support, and the TR case end is screwed so the boom cant move in or out. Correct?

been awhile since I had mine apart, but I don't think they are pinned. I think the set screws just kinda "grub" into the AL shaft and I think you are supposed to CA or epoxy the ends on too. At least that's what I recall from when I built it.

Blax1, read the very part you quoted. The issue is a torque tube spinning inside the plastic couplers that mate to the tube. Nothing to do with the boom.

As said before its a good idea to glue the coupler ends onto the torque tube. I have done this and have not had any issues.

just a follow up here.

With slow ca, is it possible then to break them off after a "mishap" to reuse them, or should I order spares for when/if I need them after a crash?

What I have done once or twice is figure out a way to suspend the torque tube above the ground, and place some pliers under the coupler, which will hold the torque tube above the ground. Place some heavy object on the pliers to hold them for you, and you can then tap the TT out of the coupler.
