I am trying to `fine tune` my Rossi 67 in my Vario Sonic/ Skyfox mechanics.

For starters I have fitted a new plug today.

The engine starts and idles nicely but seems to lack punch when needed and `bogs` quite easily when rapidly climbing.


Can anyone post up the approximate carb settings for this engine? - the main needle is just over 2 1/2 turns out at the moment.

It was about 2 turns earlier today while flying it and I couldn`t decide whether it was rich or lean so I made it richer.

Full positive pitch is about 10.5 degrees - using standard Vario blades.

Also what is the optimum head speed that I should be using for sport flying?

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I had a Rossi engine and couldn't get it to run right, in the end I got an OS 70 and haven't looked back.
Quite a few people say the Rossi is difficult to tune and after my experience with it I would have to agree.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		We start at 2 and 3/4 turns out on both needles. We also use a glow plug with an idle bar, such as the Fox long Gold series. It also helps by putting a glow driver on the heli, and have it shut off just below the 1/2 stick position. It runs best on 0 nitro. Usually, it takes at least 2 gallons of fuel run through the motor before it starts to be consistent, but after this, the motor is a bear. I have seen it fly a 25lb multibladed machine like it was nothing.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Managed to get the engine idling and running OK yesterday but still not sure whether the heli should pull and climb any better than it does.

Any idea what size blades and headspeed I should be running for the best performance on the Vario Sonic?

Maybe I`m expecting too much performance

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		OK it looks like Vario have supplied me 660`s when I bought the mechanics several years ago.

My headspeed may be greater than 1500rpm though - I`ve have to tach it at the weekend.

I take it that the Sonic is very limited in how she flys then?

1500rpm doesn`t seem that much.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		No, its more how the Rossi performs which will hold you back. For rpms, you should use the OS 70 motor, which revs higher.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		The Skyfox mechanics and Rossi engine were originally bought to go in a #2008 CF Airwolf (sold it and put it all in the Sonic instead)

I was not offered a choice of engine,but I suppose that I could have asked if I knew at that time I wanted one that revved more.

I think the Sonic is a bit heavy to do too much

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Do you know what gear ratio you have in your Sonic? I ask because I don't think it's much heavier then the Kobold, or Sky Fox, both of which I flew in pod n boom form before putting them in fuses. Both had/have Rossi motors in them and were capable of the kind of flying you're wanting to do.

For more "zip" though the OS is probably the route you will want to go.
