I wanted ask if anyone knew how difficult is it to change out a tail rotor shaft on a Spectra G. The one I have is slightly bent and I've ordered another one to change it out. Since these things come pre-assembled, I've never taken one apart no less seen the inside of one of them. I also assume that I will need to repack the inside of it with lithium grease as well. How do you go about doing that? Also is there anything else that I should be concerned with while have tail unit open?

I PM'd you a response but here it is for others who might be interested

Release the two side setscrews in the case and pull out the driving gear with the delrin coupler.

Remove the screw that holds the bellcrank arm and set the bellcrank assemble aside. Insert a 1.5mm allen driver in the screw hole and find the two set screws for the crown gear and loosen them.

Once the crown is loose you can push the shaft loose and remove the C-clip easier on the back wide when the bearing is not against it.

Pull the whole assembly out through the bearing hole.

Replace the shaft and assemble in reverse order. Once the C-clip is on you can push the gear all the way to one side to take out the in/out slop of the new shaft and then tighten the setscrews for the bevel gear through the hole in the back of the case that the screw uses to hold the bellcrank arm on. This is the big secret to easy service.

Once that's on load it up with grease though the drive side and then push the drive coupler gear assembly in the hole and secure with the side set screws. You can add grease to the assembly later if needed using the bellcrank arm screw hole.

My Spectra is kicking ass, I've been doing all sorts of aerobatic autos with it and FAI maneuvers and it flys hard and fast!

Your talking about removing the 33 inch CF arrowshaft from the tail boom? You just pull it out.

I'm confused.

How do you take the backlash out of the shaft? Mine has about 1/16 in out play in it that might be why my tail is not holding good. I should have my motor back from Hanson on Monday or Tuesday. I may have to sell my Spectra anyway i think i had a stroke the other day and now i can't use my left hand so i guess that my end my flying. I've been trying to work on my heli but only being able to use one hand it is almost impossiable to do anything. I guess i may have lost the bet about being able to fly a gasser. Just when i think my luck can't get any worse something like this happens to me.

Thanks for any info

Ivan: Has this "stroke" been diagnosed by a physician? Your symptoms could very easily be caused by a pinched nerve which would be totally reversible.

jrock you may be right on the pinched nerve i'm getting a little more use out of my hand. I got my motor back from Hanson today but my hand is still to week to be able to put the motor back in,but i'm hoping and praying i get full use of my hand back. I got my motor done as a pro plus instead of a 3D max i'm not a hard 3D flyer by no means so the plus should be good for me. I also got him to true my fan why he had it,i can do it but with my hand i just payed him to do it. I sure hope my motor is smoother now that i had Hanson work on it. I will let you know how it goes.

Does anyone know how to take the end play out of the tail shaft? When i'm able i would like to take the play out. I think that might be why my tail does not hold dead on. Unless something gets worse on my hand i'm goint to try and take the play out. Thanks Al for all the work you done on my motor i sure hope it runs smoother.

endplay

If yur talking about the out-put shaft MA 0541-8 (closed box) There is a shim 0426 that goes in, however you will find it necessary to pull it all apart to put it where it should be positioned. If I rember correctly its .005" thick. How much movement do you have? If you make it too tight it will cause the bearing to run hot and eventually fail.

Taking out play

As I said above in the post, just take out the input side and then through the bellcrank screw hole loosen the two pinion grub screws and pull the shaft tight and retighten the grubs.

Then reinsert the input side gear and check for mesh. If OK then you're good, if not then you may need to disassemble and add a shim.

I don't use any shims in mine, just pull the tail output shaft one tight but not too tight (so the bearings don't bind) and then tighten the gear setscrews and I'm good.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I thought this would fit in here rather than start a new one.
Anyway the problems with the Spectra continue as I did a reasonably fast piro today and there was loud crack from the heli in protest. I landed and on checking it over there is a lot of play in the tail rotor. This is in the direction of rotation rather than in and out on the pitch slider. If you hold the metal crown gear and then move the the tail rotor there must be a good 6 - 8mm of play before it then starts to try and turn the crown gear.
I'm thinkling I need to disassemble the tail gearbox and check the gears and if necessary replace these or if undamaged work out how to get rid of the play.
Is it possible to remove and if needed replace the gears or have I got to replace the tail gearbox as a complete unit?

You do not have to replace the whole tail assembly. MA sells everything separately so you can replace only what is broken.

It would appear not Malcolm, I'll set about stripping the tail gearbox tomorrow and see what needs doing, I think the camel's back has just been broken.

Well what can I say, I checked the tail over loosened the small grub screws and moved the input gear in slightly which reduced the backlash in the gears to an acceptable amount.
I still had a slight issue with the tail drifting so I replaced the mounting foam on my gyro. Took it up, minimal drift and seemed to be flying really nicely. Nothing too strenuous just gentle figure of 8's and then brought it round into a tail in hover.
Here endeth the life of one Spectra G, the tail let go BIG TIME and despite being only about 8 - 10 feet off the ground the combination of no tail and panic saw it doing a monumental funky chicken and eating itself alive. I almost managed to land it, albeit a bit heavy, and there in was the start of it's downfall. Just as it touched down it tipped over on the uneven ground and in my panic to hit the throttle kill I never even noticed that I'd caught the idle up switch.
Now with me frantically flicking the throttle kill, blissfully unaware of the idle up switch, I couldn't work out why it was not shutting off. I pulled the trim all the way down and still nothing. By this time there was almost nothing left of the heli so I ran over and pulled the fuel pipe off the carb.
On picking it up the circlip holding the tail output shaft in had popped out and the tail rotor shaft had come right through, and I hadn't even touched this when I checked the tail over.
I fear the list of parts to rebuild the heli will be too long and expensive to make it worth while repairing. I certainly don't have the inclination to repair something that's been nothing but trouble since the day I had it.
Still if the electrics can be salvaged then at least they can go in a replacement.

Sorry to read this gramey...

I am concerned about the quality of Spectra G's that have come out of MA this year, a lot of new owners are certainly struggling to get them flying 100% and its not just inexperience with gassers. Mine is a constant battle to keep flying and at the moment its resigned to the back shelf...

Align helicopters take such a bashing from some people, yet they are fun, cheap and easy to maintains, plus cheap to repair?

Hope you continue to enjoy flying something...

I love my Spectra G, but at this moment its got the better of me!
