They sound good, what sort of money.
Nearly crashed my EP8EX today when the GY401 crapped itself. Had a spare so its going again. It just suddenly stopped going in one direction and would not correct, then suddenly went the otherway, so a quick landing and change of shorts for me.

Well I made a mistake
Now I know I saw it somewhere on here, but I should have paid no attention to it, as I generally know better.
The delay on pitch I was having was due to incorrect order of bearings in the main blade grips.
I know I know!! Smacked myself a few times in the head for that one lol.
I also had a bent tail shaft....we can fix that one I reckon!
And an hour later it was straight. Checked it in the drill chuck.
Then when I was happy with it, I mounted it back on the heli with no tail blade grips or bellcrank.
Spun it up in idle 2, no vibes and no wobble on the tail shaft.

So I put her all back together, and put 2 packs through it in the back yard.
Just pitch pumping a bit, messing with the tail to see how it all feels.
Am getting a very minor slow drift on the tail in idle 2, but I suspect that the Spartan wires are a tad tight.
I will fix that and also try out some neoprene gyro tape.

If all goes well over the weekend, then next week I will convert back to flybarless.

Am I excited?....you bet your ass I am!

If you bling it, they will come :D

Thanks guys

There WILL be video
That is the plan all along.
Ever since my 1st QJ, I wondered if it was possible to have a good 3d QJ.
I have yet to see any video of one, and Id bet that others think the same, so they pass on the heli.

So this weekend I will do a flybarred QJ 3d video.
The following weekend (weather permitting) I will do a flybarless video.

I wish their were lower kv motors around for 500 class helis, as Id love to make mine run on 8s 2200 for efficiency.
Anyway, lets get the flybarless done and dusted 1st

If you bling it, they will come :D

no video from no flying lol.
Was extremely windy all weekend, so I was grounded lol.
Flew it after work today, put 6 packs through it.
Cyclic felt a bit too slow, so I bumped the swash mix another 5%.
Acceptable, but not fast enough for what Im used to.
The heli tracks extremely well, and is bloody fast in a straight line.
Was doing aileron and elevator tic tocs, loads of flips, backwards circuits, funnel snakes and regular snakes, plus a healthy dose of kangaroo's.
I have to say, it flies very well.
But the weight shows compared to the Protos.
Had the QJ on the scales today, came in at 1850g with a Turnigy 6s 2650 30c pack in it.
My Outrage packs weigh about 50g less.
However, my Outrage packs are old now, so they got pretty bloody hot lol, and a bit spongey too.
The Turnigy packs barely got warm, and I did not notice any drop in headspeed for at least the 1st 2.5mins.
I only fly for 3.30mins.
1st pack on the charger took 1650mah, but I know that pack didnt get spanked either lol.
2nd one took 1827.
The rest still need charging.
With the Turnigy, its a bit nose heavy.
Enought o be a pain for piro stuff.
Outrages balance out perfect. Piro all you like, no odd tendencies.

Now then Twinring!!
You need to get hold of a Turnigy 2650 30c or 3000 25c pack, and make the battery tray to suit so that the heli will balance correctly.
Why with this pack? Because they are cheap and plentiful, plus they make good power.
Downside is they are quite heavy.
Battery tray at the motor end needs to drop down about 10-15mm so that the end of the pack will not contact the canopy as battery angle increases.
To ballance properly all you need to do is steapen the angle of the battery tray.
The angles limit at the front end of the battery is about 3mm above the canopy tab on the Atom landing gear.
Just a thought Twinring.

So I am resisting the urge to put the flybarless back on just yet, as I did say I would do a video of flybarred and flybarless.
So I am sticking too this.
Should have video this weekend of flybarred.

Cheers

a few pics of her new face
Its a Fusuno Trex 500 canopy.
Wider than the genuine Trex one, which gives much better room for battery position.

Its all sounding quite good.
Jimboflies and Twinring seem to be MIA???????

I certainly like the look with that canopy against the Q of J one.

What tail fin are you using, I have always felt the heli looked dorky with the original.
Looking forward to the vids.

Sweet bird ya got there Gorn, cant wait to see the vids especially the FBL. I wish the FBL system prices were more reasonable, you can almost get a whole heli setup for that type of cash.
Just got around to my first airbrush attempt on the clear stock canopy, actually got it looking decent, didnt think it was possible.

Hey Gorn!
That thing looks great!
Sorry I havent been responding recently, I had to put my EP8 in mothballs as all my lipos are completely unusable. I wont be able to get some new packs til next year so Ive been doing other things to keep me entertained.

Im glad that you worked out any issues with the frame and canopy, I also have an unpainted version of that canopy that Id like to use in the future.

keep up the great work, Ill be watching your progress from the sidelines.

Hi Twinring, glad to see you back, had us worried there for a moment.
Sorry to hear that you cannot fly till next year.....bummer.
Any further news on your frames etc.

Don't suppose you have heard from Jimboflies as he seems to have disappeared as well.

well here is the flybarred video.
The camera we had was dead flat, so we had to improvise and use my phone lol.
Got my good friend to fly while I filmed.
All going well, there will be flybarless video next weekend, and I will get behind the sticks again.

This was his 2nd flight with this heli, and as you can see, its very well balanced.
So well done Twinring on the chassis

Things I dont like about the heli in general....
Its a fatty compared to the Protos, but every 500 is
Needs to run a full size tail servo and a much stiffer tail pushrod.
Tail blew out on me big time transitioning through a snake to inverted.
Parts arent easy to get
Parts are expensive
Its harder on my batteries than the Protos, again because of weight.

Things I like....
Its well balanced and will piro on the spot with minimal corrections
Handling is very neutral with no suprises
Not everyone has one
Easy to work on
Will do everything from a newby hover, up to fairly hard 3d with only a few option parts

Thats it from me I guess

I check here too around once a week!

I have finally finished my own EP8 sideframe design - for use with 7S A123.

CF turned out to be way too expensive, so they are made out of 1.3mm aluminium.

I have a pair of "plain" aluminium frames that I'm using to build with at the moment, but have two pair of "champagne" anodised frames on the way as well. They should match rather well with the royal blue of the EP8EX

I will post some photos on the weekend with some luck.

good to hear BRW.
Keep us posted.

Unless it is radically different, I may sell my QJ after the barless testing is done.
I like the heli, and it flies well.
But its too heavy (same as Trex 500, which is also too heavy IMO), and parts are hard to come by unless buying factory direct.
Im flying lower and harder every time I go fly now.
The thought of smashing the QJ for the sake of a trick, does not appeal to me at all.
Thats what the Protos and Trex 700 are for lol.
We will see what my thoughts are after the barless is re-installed.

Have had no time this week to convert it back yet, so this weekend for testing isnt looking promising.

Anyway, I will keep this post alive until all my testing is done and Im happy with the results.

Cheers
