Yes absolutely, looking forward to hear if
that helps sorting out the problem.

I certainly hope this works, fingers crossed

It`s allways interresting when people make
there own conversions, and we can all learn
alot from that.

Well I certainly have learned not to do another for a while

Some Video at last
Modifying the baseplate cured the carb problem
As you can see it still needs work but at least it’s flying.

I'm still a bit confused as to why the plug still looks lean on the muffler side any clues? both needles are set at 1 5/8 and the mix is still 40:1.I’ve reset the governor and it now gets to the target head speed before hover unlike the video but I’m still not sure about the plug

Hi Fixit

One thing about the reading a sparkplug, if you
land the heli and throttle down, before killing
the engien, then the rpm`s are down to the "rich"
idel setting, and that can quickly give the darkest
look, that half the plug has. Maybe inflight, the
plug has the same colour on both halfs. The best way
to read a plug, is flying, engien kill, autorotation.

Maybe the engien is a little hot, due to gearing, head speed,
and the flying style on the video.
I mean that the head speed might be a little to low, and
that the flying style is overloading the engien.

But I would say, as long as there are no burnmarks on
the top of the piston, and only a layer of oil that can be
removed with a cotten stick, so that you can se pure alu colour,
your engien is not to hot.

But is it nice to se that your are getting things sortet out.

Regards bo

I know what your saying about cutting the engine and autoing down but it’s a DX7 so no throttle cut and secondly it will auto but like a brick
You would expect the engine to be hot but it isn’t, I haven’t taken any readings with this one but when I land and hold my finger on the crankcase just under the carb I can hold it on indefinitely. I havant had the head off as that would be a big job but I do keep checking the exhaust port and the piston is still as new.
The next move is to fit smaller blades and bring the RPM up a bit and see if that runs any better, I also plan to make carbon frames for it now I’m happy how everything fits so that should get the weight down.

PS, I wont be doing any aggressive flying like the moves in the video it will be more like timid hover but I’ve built it so I want to see it fly at its best to settle my hormones

You can just turn your throttle hold setting down so the engine cuts when you hit throttle hold, ill do it at the weekend. Secondly I dont think more headspeed is the answer as 2000 is more than enough! 680-690 blades will help along with increasing the gear ratio. Also get that carbon sheet off Phil for the base plate and use a 2000mah 2s li-po instead of the Ni-mh and generator.

the last time I did that I was told to change it buy a club member
I don’t have Phil's number for the carbon And I would like to keep the generator for now anyway.
I won’t have the 680 blades for a while so no rush.
Thanks for the Video.

1 5/8 seems way rich to me but I didn't see a lot of smoke in the video. If it is rich on the low end it could explain the increase in RPM initially on take off. It will surely explain the black / white plug.

refreshing my memory: This is a stock 231 PUH with 710 blades? On my other posts I was thinking it was a 20EI.

If you want to check the top of the piston, it`s enough to
remove the sparkplug, and turn the crank till the piston
is at the top point.

Well I would say you should be able to run 1800-1900 Headspeed with little bogging if you gear for 11,000 on the engine. Trying to push the blades to 2000 on a standard engine is asking a lot for those blades.

I am happy doing 1650 with my Preddy which turns the engine about 10,000. It is easier to keep the shakes down if you are not turning so much.

I removed the muffler and wound the crank so the piston crown is level with the port I can see the piston top and use a cotton bud on it but it is black with carbon, its not a build up and I think if I wet the bud with petrol it would clean up, still need to buy a light to be sure.
