I used the Raptor H/D alloy fan with the Quick UK 90 Clutch and it worked fine for me but you need to machine the taper in the fan

Cooling the raptor

Hi, just thought I would add my comments. I tried using the std raptor fan, and the metal version and a quick uk one (more blades) all did not cure overheating. My final fix was to modify the base plate to take the r/c type motor, (still use the raptor fan with the blades machined off to mount the clutch) Immediate improvement, like a different machine. You can feel the cooling air on tickover, and my raptor 90 gasser now flies spot on.

I wish I could say the same for my new spectra g !!!!

ally42 Show some pics! I used a g230rc as well. Do you find that the clutch gets hotter than normal due to heat transfer from the engine?

Hi, I will dig out my camera tomorrow and post a pic or two. I must admit I have noticed no problems with the clutch or any heat build up in that area. It did take me a long time to sort the raptor 90 gasser, I was chasing the needles all over the place, and could not get it to run nice, until I fitted a temp gauge to the head and realised that overheating was the problem.
I don,t think I managed a full tank flight once until I modified it.

My concern with this type of conversion has been the temp of the clutch bell and the effects this may have on the JB weld I used to cement the liner to it. I have noticed that the side plates I used to mount the engine to the frame get just as hot. I machined some "fins" into the assembly to try and help but to no avail. I must admit I have been chasing my tail this summer not flying much because of a vibration issue. The "issue" I found out this weekend was a busted plastic tail gear. How this happened I am not sure. I do remember a tail strike and assume this is what caused it. Anyway, parts on order.

I used a QuickUK fan and modified the bore to fit the Zenoah taper. Due to my design, I decided to trim back the cooling head fins to fit within the stock Raptor cooling shroud.

So far, 4 gallons down, running 1900HS and engine at 12350rpm no cooling problems.

The motor is a Hanson G260 3D-Max with a Century V3 muffler.

Your 90 gasser looks stunning

I did exactly the same as you with my first 90 conversion Mike and just like you I didn’t have any cooling problems, It was a bit of a gamble cutting the fins but it all worked out all right.
I wonder if it's down to oil and mix why some have problems with the conversion.

I ran the first gallon with 32:1 Lawnboy Ashless and 87 octane pump gas. Then I switched to Amsoil 100:1 Synthetic mixed at 50:1 with 87 pump gas. This is where I've stayed for 3 gallons.

I couldn't be happier with the performance of my gasser. I have some upgrades waiting for it - full Vmax kit, DS610's, smaller fuel tank (60 size).

Even the non-believers at my field, seem suprised with its performance.

Gassers are awesome!

Hey Mike,

Was it you that I met at IRCHA flying the Raptor gasser? I know that fellow told me his name but I forgot what it was and now it seems familiar.

I was camping out a couple of tents to your left (if that was you) flying the Spectra-g and 1005 gasser.

I went flying to work on backwards upright with my 1005 yesterday evening and shooting more inverted autos with my Spectra. Man I love those helis I can't get enough and I have no idea what power I'm missing if I am as they fly super powerful for me. Today I did a vertical full power climb with my Spectra with the Hanson G26 3D max, SAB 710 blades and Zimmerman side mount muffler and that motor is pulling 1800 rpms at full collective with authority. I think I'm climbing at least 30ft per second - what a rush!

From what I saw at IRCHA, and if you are indeed the same person, your Raptor there was performing all 3d maneuvers superbly Very nice work stuffing the G26 in the raptor by the way, looks very professional!

1005 Gasser, G26 3DMax++, 2205+ flights
Spectra-g, G26 3DMax, 870+ flights

Thanks for the compliment. I spent a lot of spare time making the conversion work, so I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. I showed the boys in the Thunder Tiger tent, and they were somewhat amused. Oh well...at least I think there is a market out there!

Had a look at the options for better cooling, i am now fitting a Bergin gasser fan with a adaptor to fit the raptor clutch with the fan shroud this should give me 30% more cooling compaired to the original fan.
has anyone tried this combination before?
Phil
