Hi guys,

Today was the second day that I took both SGs to the field. Did 3 tanks on the new one (break-in) and flew 2 hard flights on the other one. During the 3rd flight, I took the heli high, and did a tail slide while doing VERY fast tic-tocs as the heli was coming down fast, and a sudden stop to turn it into a piro flip, and BOOM. Next thing I saw were parts coming down from the sky. Must have been at least a good 50 meters... This is the SG pictured below with the Insane canopy and Edge blades and black skids....

It was very easy to see where the blades hit the boom... an apparent case of boom strike... I take the blame, because the maneuver was very very hard on the heli... I should have been more careful...

Damage report: You name it, it broke!!! Including the blades and the canopy... However, I am very surprised that NONE of the gears broke... This was by far my worst crash ever, and the worst I have ever seen...

Total cost: Well, it depends on how much ReadyHeli will sell me a new kit for

Financially, it wont make sense to try to buy the broken parts separately. I should just re-kit it...

I think my electronics are fine. And since the muffler came off, there is some dirt and grass in the engine... So an engine rebuild will be done as well...

I will be taking my time with this, since I have another SG that flies... at least for now

Happy flying!

Regards,
G

Thanks Brandon. I appreciate the comment.

I am actually stripping the whole heli now, and from what I can see so far, everything from the swash and up is damaged, frames, and the whole tail... I will actually calculate the cost of rebuilding it before I buy a new kit...

Regards,
G

Amazing. A $1400 heli kit down the tubes...just like that. Plus whatever radio gear isn't salvageable.

I feel your pain, my friend.

Just checked, radio gear is all good. Everything in between the frames are also in good condition. I think I will just fix it up... We'll see...

At first it looked MUCH worse than now that it is on my work table... The thing is that I'm so anal about scratches and cosmetic damages that I will have to replace every little thing that doesn't look good, even if it still works...

I am exactly the same way.

I remember building one of my Henseleit 3D-NTs, and while putting on one of the canopy mounts, I allowed the canopy mount to rotate on the frame and it scratched the side-frame. It wouldn't have been visible, as the mount would have covered it up, but it bothered me just knowing the damage was there. So I replaced the side-frame.

There's no shame in being anal about cosmetic damage!

Sorry to read about your loss G. Those tail slides are hard on any heli. I have a friend who was doing giant fast tail slides with an Avant Aurora and the machine just came apart in mid air. It's alot of stress on the heli. Good luck with the rebuild. - Kris

Thanks Kris,

Its not the rebuild I'm worried about, its the Insane Canopy that I have to wait 4-6 months in line for

Luckily I still have a new canopy that I can have my LHS paint similar to the Insane one. The only thing is that those Insane Canopies are VERY VERY light compared to the stock SG canopy... Even my stock unpainted canopy is heavier than the Insane...

G

So a boom strike was the cause? What dampeners were you using?

Yeah, it was a boom strike. I was using the JR 3D dampers.

This was my first SG that I build in April. The new one is not ready for hard 3D yet

G

Hi George

You were having such a blast with the machine on Thursday. Sorry to hear it has 'gone to a better place'

Glad you jumped straight in to 'fix' it....the DXB way.

Regards
Paul

haha, thanks Paul.

I found the "DXB" way to be much easier!!!

However, it will be a month before I get it up in the air... I'll strip the new one completely and will rebuild it...

See you soon,
G

Vibe,
Waiting for any particular canopy painter is just plain silly. These are helicopter canopies, for God's sake! Painting them doesn't require a tremendous amount of skill. No, I can't do it myself, but pretty-much anyone who paints canopies can paint them the way Insane Canopy does.
There are hoards of places that paint canopies, and they're all equally good.

Umm... I'm dont agree here. All canopies are not created equally. Some companies pride themselves on painting canopies and clear coat way above and beyond what other companies do....
