I saw an in cockpit video of a V-22 a few years ago. The pilot said when you transition from hover to fwd flight it's like stomping the gas of a 454 LS6 Corvette, all the way up to 300mph...

2nd coolest airplane in the fleet IMO - (A-10 is by far the coolest)

Also the performance stats as compared to CH-47's were pretty amazing. 1/2 the fuel of a Chinook for the same load IIRC.

Thing is cool as all get out but my question is: When do we get an R/C version of this sucker? Now THAT would be cool and may FINALLY end all this nonsense between planks and helis.

No 300 mph here.. 230 is pushing the envelope. But yes, the acceleration is amazing! There's a couple people working on the scale models, but I remember them having issues after transitioning to forward flight due to a lack of twist in the blades. I think the individual goes by V22chap on here.
The V-22 in the realflight add-ons was a blast to play with, especially when you overpowered it. Here's my favorite pic. This was taken on the last photo op for the MH-53 prior to retirement last year. Symbolic of the CV taking the reigns.

Right seat like a "real" pilot should! They retained the cyclic stick for that real helo feel. The collective moves fore and aft instead of up and down and is called the thrust control lever or TCL. The tcl is where the pilot uses his thumb to "roll" the nacelles fore and aft 97 to 0 degrees. If anyone has any questions about this neat machine I am happy to answer what I can!

Should have never gotten one dime for this after the first dozen deaths

POS, boondoggle, and real widowmaker, my thoughts are with all those
folks that died bringing this thing through it's gestation period. All for a little more combat radius and a very slight gain in forward speed.
WHAT A WASTE of money and lives. Why should I expect more from the folks that gave us the $10,00 hammer and $35,000 toilet seat.

25 years in the making, $68 million a copy and $27 billion for the project so far. 44 total dead from non-combat deaths from 1981-2007 deployment.

A whole lot more would die without this type of innovation. There will be iterations of this design in the future that will take it to the next level. Meekness might be good for the soul but not for our warfighters.

That wiki is a great example of how wiki should NOT be populated. It's one thing to talk facts, wrong to argue continuously in wiki.

If you look at the number of V-22's delivered, total flight hours in recent years with NO crashes you will find NO NEWS ARTICLES SAYING THE SAME. You only get news articles when things go wrong. The last crash was ten years ago.

More like 107 mil a copy at least for the souped up AF version. And I totally agree with you dialarotor, its not worth all those lives lost for a little speed and radius. Look at it this way, the gov just gave away 700 billion, so the 70 billion invested in this POS is a drop in the bucket!

A little speed and radius? Are you kidding me? What other VTOL can fly at this range, speed and altitude carrying the same load?

Performance @ 47,000 lbs

* Max speed, SL, kts (km/h) -- 250 (463)
* Max rate of climb, SL, fpm (m/m)
3,200 (975)
* Service ceiling, ft (m) -- 25,000 (7,620)
* Service ceiling, one engine inop, ft (m) -- 10,300 (3,139)
* HOGE, ft (m) -- 5,400 (1,646)

Range

* Unrefueled mission radius with 24 troops, nm (km) -- 390 (722)
* Self-deployment, nm (km) -- > 2,100 (3,892) with refueling

Weights

* Takeoff, vertical, max, lbs -- 52,600 (23,859)
* Takeoff, short running, max, lbs (kg)
57,000 (25,855)
* Takeoff, self-deploy mission, lbs (kg)
60,500 (27,443)
* Cargo hook, single, lbs (kg) -- 10,000 (4,536)
* Cargo hook, dual, lbs (kg) -- 15,000 (6,147 )

Who cares, send in a bunch of B-52's with iron and cluster bombs , blow out a nice LZ, waltz up with a few Chinooks, with high cover land and take care of business. A few days later you have a C-130 jato assisted runway and all the comforts a frontline grunt could want. Think about it like the tortoise and the hare. You got a beach and a road, my friends and I come along with a COMSRON group of LMSR's and give you everything you need to pick a fight and start a war for a week.

I worked on the V-22 my last 12 years in the Air Force. If you've ever seen the movie Pentagon Wars then you have a since of what it was like on the program! There also over 100M a copy now!
