Radical fan, where to place governor magnet

Good Day,

Here is a pic of the radical fan, it has 3 holes and was wondering where to put the governor magnet. The installed magent for the CDI is the wrong polarity.

I was hoping some of the Governors were using the same polarity, but that is not the case with the GV1...

You will need to drill a 5mm hole, not all the way through, to fit the magnet 180 degrees from the EI magnet...
I put mine closer to the edge of the thick metal part of the fan so as the pickup had a better angle...
You have to put it on the exhaust side and mount it to the bottom fan plate...

I just took the supplied mount of the sensor, and bent it 90 degs and bolted it to the plate.. The plate is thick enough to thread without using nuts on the other side. You can thread it with a bolt you plan to use..

Bill, I was wondering if the EI pickup would work on the GV-1. From the photos it looks like a 3 wire pickup. Has anyone tried to see if it's compatible? In the photos I've seen, it looks like the EI pickup can be mounted in more than one place. Would a 2nd EI pickup work?

Of course that might just be too easy and wishful thinking.

Just another crappy day in Paradise....Aloha!

I used the Zenoah pickup with a Revlock governor, the only thing you have to watch out for is the pickup case is big but the sensor is in the centre and wont work if you mount the magnet off the centre line

Edit
I can see now from the picture the fan has a keyway and the magnet is already offset 30 degrees so not sure what the other holes are for.

Those are balancing holes on either side of the EI magnet....On mine the GV1 is not compatible... I just hand drilled a 5mm hole 180 degs with a new magnet from Radio shack... I had to rebalanced the fan ...

For those that are compatible, I would think you could just use a "Y" harness and share the signal off the Zenoah pickup...

The only other thing you could try is take a regular sensor
and turn it around, the "writing" facing away from the
magnet.

The sensor senses magnetic lines of force in one direction
and not the other. So you turn it around.

The only thing is that the actual sensor is very close to
the "writing" side and may be too far away if reversed.

Also there are so many different ways to make a sensor,
it may not work off the back side anyway.

I was doing some research on hall effects sensors and there are different types unipolar and bipolar. I wonder if the reason some governors will work with the ei magnet and some wont if maybe the pulse itself has to be a negative going pulse for some and a positve going pulse for others. Some governors must use a bipolar hall effects sensor where the magnet polarity wouldnt matter or maybe the circuitry inside the governor. Then again I maybe wrong and just rambling.

what do you mean by for those that are compatible? are there different g-20s or GV-1s?

will someone come out with a stator gator type interface for the G-20/gv-1?

I like the stator gator/gv-1 setup on my gasser now.

I'm sure you guys will get this figured out and post some pics and directions.

Bipolar Sensor IC Having (Positive) Unipolar Characteristics

It only reacts to the south pole (positive field), turning on and off as this pole passes the device. The north pole has no affect on the output of this sensor IC.

Bipolar Sensor IC Having Negative (Unipolar) Switch Characteristics

This sensor reacts only to the north pole (negative field) turning off as the field reaches the release point (BRP) then turning back on as the north pole moves away (BOP). The south pole has no affect on the output of this device.

Probably the easiest would be to use a gov that works with the magnet thats already there.

TaleGunner just jogged my memory.

Back before they invented the E550, we did home made conversions.
Put magnets on the main gear feeding an E-multigov. Grabbed
the signal and ground off the sensor and also fed it into an
EagleTree FDR.

It may be possible to use a common sensor.

But there is danger here. The ignition system as well as
the governor is expensive. You may need something more than
a voltmeter to verify that you can "marry" the 2 together
as we did on the E-conversions.

Forgot,

Did not use a complete "y" harness. Cut the Red wire on one
side. I also remember the FDR may have had the signal on a different
pin. So you would need to verify which wires have the signal and
ground on the Zenoah sensor first.

rev limiter or throttle curves

Hello All
Just reviewing all the posts re: govenors etc. Is a governor needed or a rev limiter (i use rev limiters) or are the throttle curves in St 1 & 2 good enough to fly aggresive or even 3d. Are gas engines more stable and reliable when setting curves IE: less bogging or leaning out coming out of loops etc.

You dont need a governor if your throttle and pitch curves are set up correctly, I fly with curves but Im not a hard 3-d guy which would benifit from a gov. I have added a gov to my p-gasser to learn how to set one up and will probably add one to my Radical but not untill the engine is broke in and my throttle and pitch curves are to my liking as a gov can mask engine tuning problems on a gasser so I been told.

Well its confirmed that Century UK have some kits on the way so that’s great news but the bad news is they work out at $1,276 for the G10 kit + motor after crossing the pond it's not Century UK's fault but which ever way you look at it that’s big bucks for a 50 size Heli minus blades and a decent muffler, shame really but I'll wait and see what Align bring out first.

I agree with you Peter. I was quoted the same here but they include the blades and muffler. Still a hefty price for a 50 size like you said.
Any news on the Align?

Cheers

Why is it soo much more? UK taxes customs fees? I thought century shipped free over $100 now and the CF kit with eng in under $1000 US.

one of my buddies just got his radical and he mounted the magnets for the govener in the main gear, makes sense to me would be a peice of cake to mount sensor.
