Hi guys,

I'm working on an Unmanned helicopter project. The mission is to design a helicopter that takes elevator, aileron and rudder commands and completes them stably, smoothly and AUTONOMOUSLY. For an example, I want the heli to hover at one spot for 1 mins then move the left 30 meters then hover at that spot for the other 2 mins all at the same altitude (3ft off the ground). The heli should be able to carry out these tasks and perform corrections for external disturbances autonomously.

So what are the IMU units available on the market? Is there any recommended one?

Thanks,

Long Nguyen

Thank you Patrick!

Since I only want stabilization, would a Gyrobot 900's beginner mode work? I want something that's optimized for helicopters.

Suggest KDS

Another cheaper alternative I just tried is the KDS Flymentor. This unit stabilizes a helicopter very well and is much cheaper than the Gyrobot. I don't think it is for hard 3D but it is great for scale flight and learning maneuvers. It will keep the helicopter horizontal when there is no stick input. In position mode it can hold the helicopter in a given position as long as it is not too great a distance from the ground. This unit is for helicopters and I think may be ideal to couple with a guidance systems that does not have a internal IMU that deals with helicopter stabilization.

The setup took a little bit of work but after that it has been great. I have been doing a number of tricks and if I lose oreintation it has bailed me out. So I am getting better without as many spare parts orders!
