e-BEAM Beam E4 > Which motor to install?

I'm fitting out my new Beam with a new Scorpion motor and am wondering which way to go. I could use the 2221-8 V2 or the 2221-12 V2.

I'm flying mostly scale maneuvers with some mild sport thrown in here and there, this is to better learn smooth control input in preparation for AP work on a larger heli. All my flying for the next six months is going to be indoors only for the balance of the winter up here.

For a mild headspeed (≈2000 rpm) and longer flight duration what are your recommendations? I will be keeping the beam long term but I'm not a 3D pilot, so wild power is not a requirement for me.

Thanks

Other pertinent details:

Hyperion 2200 30C packs
HS 5065 servos (better than the 65MG yes?)
401 and 3400
6100e
Either:
Scorpion 2221-12 V2 with 11T or
2221-8 V2 with 13T

I would forget about the 2221-8, with a 10T pinion your HS would avg. 2477rpm. 2221-10 w/10T HS avg. 2067rpm, the 2221-12 w/11T HS avg. 1955rpm.
The 65MG would be more efficient for what you want, you could also use the HS-56HB.

Hi 770,

Interesting that you aren't recommending the 5065 over the 65MG. I was thinking that the 5065 being digital, would center better and therefor be a better choice for flying accuracy.

You are right about the centering. I was thinking about the juice digitals uses.

How significant is the difference in power draw, is it definable?

Wow! that is a big numerical difference. Do you have any real world sense on how much that may shorten flight time? Just curious.

So what is your experience with the two technologies: is the analog servo more than good enough at centering compared to the improved digital solution?

The thing is I'm currently using 65MG servos on my Blade 400 but feel that I'm not as likely to see the difference on this bird as I will on the Beam. Just my ramblings anyways...

The HS-5065MG will center twice as good as the HS-65MG. As far as flight time goes I don't really notice a flight time difference between digital and analog servos on electric helis.

Thanks 770.

What hardware are you flying in the 450 class? Are you using a Scorpion motor?

When you say mostly Scale flight and some more advanced stuff it almost sounds like 2 different setup, what I would be curious about is what kind of headspeed do people think you need? Not very experienced myself but I would think anything under 2500 would be dead in response? 2221-10 with a 14th gets about 2700 off the calculators.

770,

Much easier, thanks. The significant focus of heli flying today seems to be largely concentrated on 3D applications so it takes a little bit of effort to gather relevant info for 'niche' flyers like myself.

Supra6,

I mentioned mild sport flying in addition to scale manoevers, so a mild mannered setup is adequate for both.

I only have my own experience to fall back on here, but on my Blade 400 a head speed of 1850 which I currently run provides more than enough power and response for the style of flying I do.

I'm likely to go with a 500TH motor and either a 10 or 11T pinion for a theoretical head speed of around 2250. This is mostly because I can use the dynamic motor range for more agressive flying should I choose to go that way, and for other applications later on as well.

You can also use a 4S set-up with the 500.

A quick question on that: Will I be able to use my Align 35A ESC with a 4S setup?

It's border line on the amps, should work fine for you. You will need an external BEC.

I've got to find some time and learn about this stuff better. Meanwhile, Will the Park 6V BEC do the trick?

If I stay with 3S presumably I can get away without a BEC?
