She's been out of commission for a few months. I flew twice yesterday. Flawless! Felt great. Today my third flight I notice I'm hung in the grass and can't get off the ground. When I moved the heli over4 it seemed to not have the power to lift off and died? Low fuel so I refueled. Started up and notice it does not have the power it did? I cant get up in the air without it dying. Could this be a clutch liner prob?

sounds just like my problem, once the engine warms up no power. For me my engine needs a rebuild.

change all your fuel lines including inside the tanks. I'll bet they are soft and are flattening out. Otherwise take a look at your glow plug, make sure all the screws are tight on the engine (backplate, head, glow plug, carb) and make sure the throttle arm on the carb hasn't moved. I'll bet fuel lines or maybe some foreign material got inside the carb.

To add onto to what Jschenck said,
How old is the fuel your using? If it's old trash it..
I am always amazed when someone comes to the field and has problems then I find out the fuel has been in a garage for six to twelve months.

Fresh Fuel is good..

The next question is does the engine seem to respond sharply to the throttle/collective commands that you give it? OR does the engine seem like it's not making the power???

First solve engine/power problems and if it still doesn't want to climb then it becomes a mechanical thing.
First thing on mechanical checks is the clutch.

Post back, keep us advised, we are all here to help you out!

Its more likely to be the fuel lines or the plug got toasted on that last lean run.

I've used fuel thats been over 6 years old and not had a problem. It was stored in a cool dark place with a tight lid.

If you leave the cap off regularly then moisture is absorbed in the fuel causing problems.

If it starts easy and doesnt get real hot it's probably your fuel lines. If it is a litrle funny starting and gets hot no matter the needle setting, it's ready for an overhaul.

I'm leaning towards the above comments about clunk line / glow plug. but what does this mean?

Did you move the heli physicaly or make a carb adjustment? What does the back-plate feel like or what temps you getting off engine? Runing fine then not runing right could be temp related - get hot less power etc...did you run these flights back to back?

flights ran back to back. I think the fuel lines suggestion sounds like could be the culprit. I'll check all reply suggestions and post findings. Thanks and keep em comin. Not much time to do lots as 2jobbin and family.

I've made no adjustments. This heli came from Mich. and I live in Ky. so that may be a factor as well. I'm new to nitro this being my first I'd like to have a descent experience with it! WHOLE SCENARIO, I take it out to fly, set it down and power all up and start. Try to lift off several times and then notice hung in grass, Moved heli reset restart and now it seems to have had significant loss of power or head speed heli died an auto down. Fire up and hit idle up could get a bit of power but not for long, back to normal on thr. sw. heli died auto down from 4' for a newb. is something. Anyway that's it!

Mixture????

Sounds lean. Richen it up a bit and see if it improves. If so, keep going until it is too rich and four stroking on a full power climbout, then go back lean a couple clicks.

What would four strokin sound like? Hope that's not a dumb Q but i'm a newb in the nitro dept. not fully just air wise.

Four stroking means the engine is firing every other revolution instead of every revolution. Kinda hard to describe the sound, but it gives it a lower note and a rough sound because you are hearing the exhaust note every other time. Often, and especially if the mixture is just slightly rich enough to cause four stroking, it comes and goes making it more noticeable.

I like finding the four stroking point because it defines the rich end of the mixture settings. When too rich, the engine will continue to run but is not making optimum power. When too lean, you can both damage the engine and cause it to die suddenly. Much easier and safer to find the four stroke (rich) point and then go slightly lean from there.

This is all extremely easy on airplane engines because you can tune at idle and at full throttle while on the ground. On a heli, you can adjust the idle on the ground but the high speed mixture has to be evaluated and adjusted in flight.... there is no other (safe) way to run the engine full throttle.

All descripstions desrcibe the action of the heli. New fuel lines have been installed. Pull n Pitch had an alternative diagnosis that might be addressed. Waiting for good weather day for test!

All told a little leaning out was required. Came in a couple clicks and voila! Think I heard the "four strokin thing already". Thanks for all the help and the spot on diagnosis!!

dbldins-
Alot easier to reel it in a couple of clicks than to change out a clutch assembly!

Glad to hear the new fuel lines and leaning it down got you airborne!

Thanks to you guys for the advice. It was nice to watch the fuel tank run dry hovering at three feet. That's cool for a nitro newb! Gosh I enjoy this stuff!!
