I will always fly nitro. I love the smell, the sound. I am terrible at planning ahead with my battery charging. With nitro I can grab and go. I have several Rx packs and my main Rx pack is 2600 mah and I can fast charge it in 15 minutes. It will take a pretty amazing innovation to make me leave nitro.

GASSER!!!!!!!

Been using a zenoah g26 in a plane all summer and I love it!!!!

But hey I fly my R30 just in a sport flyer fashion and get 15min. So the cost in that matter is not as significant as 3d'ing a 50 or larger but as I stated if I was to go bigger heli it would be a gasser.

Interesting topic, one that will never die. I'll start by addressing that I fly nitro machines. At present I own and fly a fifty and ninety size helio. They are of oriental design and this includes the airframe, electronics and power plant. They make noise and a lot of smoke, something I believe all males perfere. Unfortunatley I have been flying with two others that perfere electrics. One individual would never switch because of the cost and the other started with electrics and believes they are the furture. The fellow looking torward the furture is always investing in new technology associated with advancements in E-Flight. The other individual never allows his chopter to get further than onehundred feet from him while flying. A T-Rex 450 becomes even smaller as the distance widens. Personally distance and investments don't hinder me. I have upgraded my machines not for the bling but flight performance and orientation in flight is a learned behavior.
Electrics will outnumber nitros due to the age group they are designed to attact and nitro machines will remain for the puress. It is my opinion that most electrics because of their size are just toys. Yes, they will increase in size within the next ten years but so will there cost. Lets see how many teenagers able able to afford a $900.00 kit. Think about what a T-Rex 450 cost just for the kit and triple it size to compare to a 90 size platform.

flycatch, larger electrics within 10 years?? Guess you missed the announcement of the E-Aurora, The Heinselit Rigid, the Electric 700 T-Rexes and soon Stock kit, how about Curtis Youngblods Rave ENV in electric 12S, I'd think Curtis would not invest if he to didn't see it as being the future don't ya think?? And well several more 90 Eletrics that have been announced just within this last 6 months, and more are on the rise guaranteed, not next ten years, right now as we speak my friend . Cost, no their cost if anything has not been going up on average, in fact if you look at the combos that Align has compare it to what you got only a few years ago you'll see what I mean. Lipos, those are going down to, and guess what getting better to and producing more power, for longer flight times, and longer cycles so that holds no water either....We'll re address this thread in 12 months, I'm willing to bet you dime to dollar we shall see far more advancement on the electric side both in kits and overall advancements over nitro, I'll bet you any heli you want that this will be true.

450s and electrics as you say to attract an "age group" disagree with that one to an extent and agree to some. Cost to attract less income yes which could highlights youths more, but I think you will find far more the reason is ones ability to goto a big field, to travel to, and in many cases now pollution and noise controlled areas as it has been mentioned. In several Euro locations this is the LAW, not a want or would prefer it is the way it is. In several places there are strict enforcements to this as well. I know tons of peeps who have a 450 or smaller electric for the reason of convienience, they can toss up 5-6 packs in their playground or on their work trip and they get the flight time in, no mess, no fuss just fun.

In all sizes..450s, don't cost to much now many new ones for under 750 rtf, and many many slightly used ones for a couple hundy,,, pretty affordable if you ask me. And on that note the Rigid for example something in the range of 1200USD just for the kit, guess what they're back ordered into next summer allready. If people want it, they want it, same with a Kasama 90 nitro to, same gig, hard to get and they are very high priced, it's all in demand, this is a hobby of luxury and tends to attract people who don't mind spending money.

something i would like to add, if you compare the trex 600 n to the 500, i know the 500 is abit smaller, but not to bad. on average you pay 30 for a gal of 30%. now, you can go buy off brand 25-30c 6s lipos for under 60. when doing the math, those batts only have to last longer than 2 gallons of fuel. we all know unless something happens they will last way longer. in a month people will spend 100 plus on fuel, so if you spend 200-250 on batts one month, you would be set at the field way longer than nitro. even if you only get 50-75 flight on each pack you still end up on top. lets say 60 flights on each pack at 5 min=300 min at about 55$ for the pack. now nitro,10 flights in a gallon 7 min a flight= 70 min. so it will take 4.5 gallons to equal that one pack, 4.5 x 30 = $135 for that price you could have 2 new packs and possibly a used one.

blades $80-90 for good cf for the 600n, and around $50 for the 500. more power, buy the new 55 and i can buy the ice 75 esc and a scorpion motor for almost half the price, and will out perform the 600 all day. also, you could just buy the motor and have more power for $75
i know there is a decent size difference, but im not dissapointed in the difference and i came from a 700. these things are just something to consider.

at first, i thought a 90 size electric was a bad idea because of the 12cell setup you need and the prices, but then i thought about my 700 drinking a gallon of nitro in 1-1.5 hours. you start coming to terms with how exspenceive they are and the fact that you start limiting your flying do to the fact that you cant spend so much on nitro this month.

what im getting at is that with the 500 being out and off market batts being out the gap has close and right now im saving tons more money than you guys flying nitros and im have the same amount of fun. the future holds only an even worse sanario for the nitros.

what will be powering our helis in the future.

I think some kind of internal combustion powerhouse has always been and will always will be the ideal choice of your average pilot. Sure.. bats are improving and thats a good thing for all of our electronics. . In all seriousness, with the increase in nitro prices and the run time issues with bats... I think gassers will improve and be the ideal alternative. Align, came up with an answer and I predict that the upcoming 700G will flood the market. I'm aware that gassers has always been around but with Align being one of the contenders, its only going to get better because they are known for their great prices. Not to mention all the other benefits.

While I made a joke the other day about electrics and winning competitions... has an electric heli won a major event yet (3d,fai, etc) like XFC, 3DM, Worlds? If so, how much are they winning now? Just curious. I mean with all these 'advantages' on paper, are they transferring to wins?

Emphasis and corrections mine.

Saving money in this hobby, thats an interesting angle.

I'm going to go out on a long limb over thin ice and say that I don't have the same amount of fun flying my 500e (or an FBL logo 400) over my stratus.

Subjective opinions are expected, but I would keep equations out of it. (e.g. 'the same' should have In My Opinion all over it)

I like and fly both but sheesh you folks are getting a little nutty now.

A 500 gets roughly 4 minutes on a pack if you are flying 3D. I'm just getting warmed up when it's time to land. Conversely I get 10 minutes of 3D flying on a Vibe 50 and still land with 1/4 of a tank.

Also, if you are paying $30 a gallon for 30% you are not looking very hard. I believe Magnum was selling 30% (actual nitro) for something like $16 a gallon at IRCHA. I paid $18 for Wildcat CY 30% in April. All you need to do is get a few friends and buy in bulk.

not looking hard, now im suppose to hunt all over the us for fuel.

not everyone has a few heli friends to buy in bulk with, dont just assume that is the answer.

also, i really dont like wild cat.
