the price of nitro went up last year in my area and is only gonna keep going up. 30-35 bucks a gallon takes all the fun out of the hobby. in the next 5 years the average income will not be able to afford the fuel. i have been in the hobby for 5 years and the prices have went up around 15 bucks in my area. i like to fly 4-5 times a week when i can, but nitro prices keep that at bay. in the next 5 years there will be some big changes. some of these off brand battery packs for 500 size helis are only 15-20 bucks more than a gallon of 30%. so, what will happen with nitro in the next 5 years for the average pilot, will electric be main stream. this is not a nitro vs electric battle, it is for oppinions on what will be powering our helis in the future.

Ass-kicking quick-charging batteries.

I'm pretty sure I've already purchased my last nitro-powered bird. Where I fly most of the time the noise makes 'em unacceptable. Rapid improvements in battery tech combined with regular decreases in cost per flight make electric the most sensible choice, for me anyway. The higher HP/wt is the clincher.

Plus I'm saving a flippin' fortune by not having to buy paper towels & Windex.

Soon as I am able to charge my flight packs the same time it takes to refuel my nitro heli, and get the same flight time, performance through out the flight......THEN I will go all electric!

Lets see what comes out next in battery technology.

Lipos of now...not there yet

HMMMM...15 amp @ 110v available in every house. With the right technology I think its realistic.

Cheers,
Raven

We already pay around $35 to $40 a gallon here in Queensland, Australia. The thing is, once I flew a 90 nitro I was hooked. I would probably spend my last $40 on a bottle of fuel

Sounds like this is a Income to hobby based post.
Your post will start the debate by you referencing Electric prices coming down, so obviously your leaning toward Electric due to the cost of Nitro in your one specific regional area!
This is not true in a broad ban area, currently I only pay a couple of dollars more for 30% than I did a couple of years ago. As everything is in today's economy. (Orlando,Florida)

Rule of retail is; If individuals can "afford it" be it a Ferrari or Nitro people will buy it!

I do agree that Nitro prices have risen over the last couple of years but in retrospect, What hasn't???????
Food, Gasoline, Utilities, etc, etc, etc,
Nothing is getting cheaper! Unless I'm missing something.

Electric has come along way in battery technology, but Nitro will continue. Fuel manufacturers listed here on RR are constantly working to improve the fuel and the cost per gallon to manufacture and will remain mainstream.

Your 2 cents versus mine, time will tell.

The battery hasn't been made that I'd trade my nitro for.

Did anyone actually clarify if this was the case or not? Heard the same rumor.

And yet equivalent sized and equipped electrics consistantly have better than 150% the HP/wt ratio of nitros, and some are approaching the 200% mark.

For 43 yrs I've loved the look and smell of nitro birds -- always will -- but these days to fly nitro I've gotta drive 20 miles, as opposed to ½ mile to fly electrics.

And I'm becoming addicted to the extra power.

I got two gallons of fuel 15% Cool Power 4 months ago. Cost me about $57.00 at the local hobby shop 30 miles away. I still have 1.2 gallons left. I'd fly every day if I had the money I guess. Man I love heli's. Wish I had an electric.

Nitro is imorted from China, but alcohol has nearly doubled in price in the US and is still domestic. Watch what happens to the price if cap and tax passes.

nitro-nirvana

count me in as a "nitro diehard" my first helicopter 16 years ago was an electric- kyosho ep concept; I learned to hover & fly around with it; I fly a couple of electrics and like them but there's nothing like the sound and power of a nitro bird! and I like tinkering with the motors!

my downward spiral into poverty--is a death spiral!!
