Henseleit 3DNT - Rocket - 3DMP > tips for reversing oneway in starter shaft needed

boy, this 3DNT has been a learning experience.

i should have studied the diagrams a little better. i was ready to maiden today; got to the field; fueled up; started the motor and rather quickly figured out that i ran it up backward.

it was blowing fuel out of the carb, and the main gear was spinning with the oneway.

so.....

i've already soldered up a deans patch cable to reverse the polarity of my starter. but, since my starter shaft has a oneway, does anyone have any advice for flipping the oneway bearing so it will start clockwise?

i have the mavrikk oneway starter shaft

the idea is to have two of the blue bases --one clockwise and one counterclockwise (the shaft slides right out)

there appears to be two setscrews in the side of the blue base for releasing the oneway. but, a large radial bearing is pressed into the top of the base, with no easy way to press it out from the backside.

anyone performed this operation before?

otherwise i'm stuck lugging yet another tool (a drill) to the field.

if it ain't broke…break it.

Take the one-way bearing out and flip it over. There is an arrow on the one-way bearing showing which way it goes.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I would take the starter shaft apart and see if you can press it out from the other side? I know you can buy bearing pullers, but they aren't cheap.

I did it. And I believe I have the same start shaft. I took the shaft off by taking out the set screw. Then heated the upper part up that has the bearing in it with a heat gun. Hit the bearing out with a dowel. I then turned it around, and put it back in. Works fine. Also I still have to reverse the wires on my starter.

thanks for the ideas.

i had already soldered up a deans 'reverse' patch. so, the starter spins the correct direction now.

but, the mavrikk oneway base is still giving me fits. i see no easy way to press out the bearings (there's a large radial at the top that meets the shaft, with the oneway below that). trying to tap out from the backside is nearly impossible, as the hole is only an 8mm bolt hole. even with a punch i can't get the angle to catch the edge of the bearings.

i did find a helimax starter shaft on the shelf with a little different construction. it has two oneways, one pressed in from each end of the base. i'm going to try my luck with a micro torch and a punch.

if it ain't broke…break it.

update: the helimax shaft base is much simpler. two oneway bearings pressed in to a straight-through hole. no step/stop for the bearings. so, a quick blast with the torch and they hammered out one following the other. flipped them over and pressed them back in.

motor fired right up, FYI

if it ain't broke…break it.

This is the main reason all of my 3D-NTs are left-rotating. I specifically didn't want to deal with a reverse-rotating engine.

It's tough enough finding engines with Heim cranks. Just imagine how much more difficult it would be to simply find parts for reverse-rotating engines, let alone finding entire reverse-rotating engines with Heim cranks!

When that engine craps out on you, what are you going to replace it with?

i've never had a problem ordering os parts. if i toast the whole engine it may be time to re-think. but, it shouldnt be a problem ordering normal rebuild parts like pistons, sleeves, rings, bearings, etc. guess i'll find out when that time comes.

if it ain't broke…break it.

Where do you order your OS parts?

I have a 91-SX c-spec and I need a Heim crank for it. Do you know where I can pick one up for this engine?

When I had questions for my OS I contacted them directly, and they answered all of my questions. I believe there was one on their site also. Try here.
