This is my first year in RC and heli's and love it.

Aside from my flying machines, I picked up what I believe is an old Dubro something or other, and I intend to restore it to flying condition at some point.

More to the point though, a fellow locally has this Gazelle for sale and it looks to be in excellent condition and complete.

I need to know what a fair price for this would be as he's asking for an offer, and I have no clue what the real value would be. I haven't seen it first hand yet.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Mark

If you got some spare cash around and he knows what he's got then I would say a 800.00 to 1000.00 But if you could get it for around 350.00 that would be a steal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Depends on what kind of sentimental value you have toward the Schluter Gazelle. For us old guys we love to look at the old time helicopters. There are a lot of sentimental value for us. For some one that just starting out in learning how to fly helicopter. Maybe they have zero sentimental value towards an old helicopter.

Growing up in the '70's, I remember watching what would have been first generation model helicopters at a local fun fly - looking back, it likely was Steve Gray flying. Years later in the late '80's - early '90's I remember seeing Scott sending a heli up and down the flight line in what was a sort of large tictoc with some traveling flips thrown in. I've never lost that image from my mind, and am now lucky enough to have the time and money to try some of these things myself.

Truth is, a year ago I wouldn't have known a Schluter from a schnauzer but, am now really interested in the vintage stuff - how it was built and designed, and ultimately - how it flies...

Don't get me wrong, I love my Vibe 90 - and it certainly does it's job, but it doesn't have the historical significance - and never will, that some of these other machines have. I'm flying in a time where the electronics and mechanics and power systems really make the job of flying one of these machines about as easy as it can get. I find it amazing - knowing what I do now - how they (some of you), managed without computer radios and gyros etc.

Bottom line, the vintage stuff is nothing if not cool.

Thanks for the replies,
Mark

Sounds like someone has been bittin by the vintage bug ... welcome to the club and go for that gazelle ,,, you will love it .I too never had one ,,but setup one for a guy later on in the early 90's and it was a hoot to hover .
I would as has been said before, start out in the 325 to 400.00 area first and probably you will own it . It is always easier to go up than wish you had started lower after you are driving home with it .

Well, I got enough time today to see it in person...

The Good:

It's original and complete.
It's in very nice condition and he had it "hoovering"(sic), as recently as last year.
He has the original radio gear (not installed) and it looks to be mint.
He's the original owner and builder.

The Bad:

I've seen oranges with a smoother finish.
He bought a new radio and servos last year (JR 662 - 72 MHz) and won't split the radio from the heli.
The $800 price tag is non-negotiable - and judging by the house and cars and other things, money isn't a concern.

Anyhow, a strip job on the paint and some reproduction decals and it'd be super nice. I just need to decide if I feel it's worth that kind of money to me.

That is a tough call .... to bad he won't seperate the radio ,,, they are worth nothing now .
The price is high I feel ,, since you have to repaint ,, otherwise if it didn't need that type of work it might be worth it .

Good luck on your decision

Trade maybe?

How about offering to detail his cars or do some landscaping in partial payment? Just kidding but if that Gazelle is so nice as a core machine, it would be a shame to let it get away. Think of the chances of ever seeing one this complete and clean again.

Larry - Sent you an email.

Thanks!

It sounds to me that his LHS hosed him on the new radio. I did tell him I wasn't interested in the new radio and servos etc., as they are dated already. I gently told him they really weren`t worth much, but I also didn`t want to come across as trying to rip him off.

Apparently the radio setup with a 401 gyro and some JR tail servo who`s number I didn`t recognise set him back $700. So, I kind of understand where he`s coming from...

Anyhow, he`s a nice enough fellow. I`m going to think on it a bit. I love the fact he`s got the original radio gear too. It would make a great static display if nothing else.

$800 is a tough call on an old Gazelle with an old radio. I would really think hard about it before committing.

Mark if you haven't seen the restoration work on a Hirobo Gazelle in RC Rotorworld from the U.K. take a look at the last few issues if you can find them. It isn't the same set up/manufacturer as the one you're looking at but those Gazelles can be quite expensive and are also time consuming to restore. The one in the magazine has a fenestron tail. In the last installment of the September issue they have stripped the paint (looked like 6 coats) and applied three coats of primer then painted it with three coats of white and two coats of red. Pristine work. My point is you may not be able to get him to come down in price and if you find another model lurking about somehwere I don't think it will be much less than his asking price. It's hard for me to say I would part with that much money for this particular model but I might if it was another model. They are very rare.

Well, after thinking on it a bit, I can't justify this purchase for myself. It's tempting, but a little more than I want to spend - all things considered.

There were a couple PMs I received with interest in the heli, so I spoke with the seller this morning and asked if he minded me passing his phone number on - and he doesn't mind - so that's what I'll do.

Hope someone can work out a deal and get this thing polished up.

Well, I got an email from the seller last week. He told me I can have it for $500. Needless to say, I picked it up!

I have to assume some of you guys must have beat him down a bit - thanks for that.

I'm looking forward to restoring it when time permits. It's certainly a great candidate, as there are no major flaws that I've seen.

One question I have though - Were these Gazelle's available with either a fixed or collective pitch setup? Were the collective pitch set ups referred to as the "Expert" head?

Thanks,
Mark

They were available with both and the Expert head is the collective head.

Thx for the info TM.

Thx for the offer Adam....I think I'll hang on to the CP head

I just picked up a Dubro Hughes 300 in good shape and a Kavan Jet Ranger kit with a few pieces missing, so it looks like I'm going to have a fun winter getting these 3 helis into shape!
