Can any of your guys that have the Whirlybird 505 tell me which brand and model of engines you are using. I want to get an engine for mine.

Guess that's me...

I suggest the OS 40FP or Tower 40 as starters. An OS 40LA would work too as it's simply a recast 40FP. Oh wait, the LA has its needle valve assembly on the back plate. Maybe that's not such a wise choice if "Plug-N-Play" is desired. It would have to be modified somewhat.

Last suggestion for an engine currently in production and available (but untested by moi): Thunder Tiger GP 42 ABC. Tower Hobbies shows them in stock for around $63. Should do the job well.

Good luck!

Are you kidding? It's dark out!

Truth be told, my 505 is still broke from one year ago. It wouldn't be all that hard to fix but I haven't been in the mood. I also have a second one that was flying for a few seconds but it crashed hard and needs major repair. Both Whirlys need new main blades as a minimum. I'll get back to them some day.

And what about yours? You were so fired up to get one flying and then someone must have dumped a few hundred gallons of water on you. What's your excuse, huh?

505

I have been scratch building a 505, that i was going to power with my K&B sport 40 that was the same as my original. i had no luck with my first one back in 73 and want to try again. i ran my engine the other day and had forgot just how noisy they were and why i am interested in your 4 stroke idea. Do you have a size and make in mind ? i am still flying a Dubro O&R shark and restoring a Ed Sweeny superbird. thanks bill

Do you mean building a kit?

Or some original parts?

I will post the new four stroke when and if it works..

I do not want to burden you with my experiment until then...

it would be better for you to go stock if you have not

flown the whirlybird with authority...it was my first ship

and I have super fond memories, as does Steve. Looking for a
shark with collective if you have any ideas....

best,

michael

505

this is a scratch build other than my original tailgear, built from copy of the manual, pictures, and my superbird that is a modified 505. My original other than a few flights really beat me! but a that time i was a experienced airplane not helicopter flyer. My next machine dubro 300 was great and learned and had many flights. If i get one controled fight with the 505 i will be happy. really like the 4 stroke idea, will keep a eye out for a shark collective This my shark that i still fly stock no gyro but just cruise around the field. Thanks bill
