Hey there folks.

As I've mentioned in another topic, I'm back to the Protos, finally! I really missed it.

So, I thought I'd catch some shots of the assembly process and here we go. Not quite done yet, but almost :-)

To answer two of your questions right away:

1) Yes, I installed the servos wrong in first place, but swapped them later.
2) My ESC leads are quite long, I'll cut them down as soon as I know where the battery needs to go.

And for the nosy people who want to know what's in it:

JR DS3517 non-MG
JR DS3500G
JR G370 3D Gyro
Spektrum AR7600
Scorpion HK3026-880kV on 15 tooth pinion
Castle Creations Phoenix Ice Lite 75A
Hyperion CX 2500mAh 6S Pack
MSH SAB CF Blades

I'm really happy with my tail. No slop, but still just as easy as it can get. For the main rotor head, I'm still working on it, but had to grind a little off the seesaw brass nut, to eliminate sideways slop. Great now. Will have to mess with the ball cups some more, they have play. Oh, and my flybar was bent right away. That's why I hate them and went to FBL on my last one! :-)

ENJOY!

Looks nice. You passed on the opportunity to run the long lead from ESC to Rx through the nifty tunnel... half the fun of owning plastic frame.

enjoy it.

Are all of the metal bits now media blasted? Or is it your camera? They just look different.

I don't know, I just think my camera is awesome :-P

But I think they are pretty similar to the first Protos parts I've had.

I guess so.
The newer kits have a different finishing on the metal parts (more dull).

the ferrite ring works best near the receiver. where you have it now, you might aswell remove it completely...

talking about the ferrite ring, thanks for pointing it out. as far as i have understood spektrum, they recommend removing it and not using it.

fuhlemann,

Looks nice. I'm impressed with the neat wiring job of yours.

BTW, I'm wondering if anybody has his ESC on the bottom part
of their frame just below the lowest main bearing? I have
mine there at the moment, mainly for fear of over-heating it.
Anybody out there doing the same? or is it not recommended?

Akira
I have my esc mounted in the factory specified location under the battery tray.
Ive been flying it for about a year now, all through our Australian summer.
All I did to keep it cool, was dremel a cooling hole in the bottom of the canopy.
Ive had 2 different esc's, both ran almost cold regardless of how hard I flew it.
1st was an Align 75a, now I have a Kontronic 80a.
No heat issues at all.
At least this way in a crash it has some protection.

If you bling it, they will come :D

Just be sure not to put the capacitors out of the frame (a nearly impossible job).
In a front crash, the capacitors are likely to be damaged.

On my first Protos I realized that the position of the ESC below the battery isn't an ideal way to do it, if some of you power-parts get hot. i.e. if the battery gets really hot, it'll heat up the esc as well and vice versa.

Thank you Akira. I actually followed the advice to hide the esc wire in the little tunnel, resulting that It actually looks a bit better now. Updated pictures as soon as I get it all done with head, linkages and tail support braces.

the only reason the battery gets really hot....

Your headspeed is too high and your battery cannot take the amp draw
Your stick banging lol
Your flying too long
You have too high a pitch range for the power draw your battery can take.

I fly pretty hard for 3.30mins. none of my packs get hotter than barely warm.
Headspeed is 2850, pitch is 12.

Flying style: 4 point tic tocs, kangaroo's, piro flipping, regular tic tocs etc etc.

To me if your packs are getting that hot, something is wrong, and you should not keep flying til you get it sorted.

Im not critisising or anything like that, its just my opinion and what I have learnt the hard way at times with the protos lol.
Cheers

I do agree on that. I was using a 6s 2450mAh Pack off of china ebay (35c burst) for about 30$ each :-D What'd you expect?

I got the new hyperion G3 now, which shoul really hold up well.

No flight yet. I ordered a DX7 SE and the antenna was broken right away so I had to send it back in and haven't gotten it back yet. It's kind of possing me off a little, but I will be able to try the DS3500G/G370 combo on two helis ;-) my rave and protos, which both haven't had their maiden flight yet.

I'll let you know, that's for sure!

DONE! Maiden flight today! Even though I'm absolutely NOT happy with the servo/radio set up, some how it still flies great and is somewhat stable. The JR370 gyro works well on this one too, power is good! Like it a lot! Pictures coming soon.
