This is a fully autonomous helicopter system for a graduate thesis at Wright State University. The entire system was developed in house including hardware and software. We started with a Trex 450 and eventually progressed to the 600 Pro Electric which is pictured here.
In this video you can see the heli take off and ascend to altitude at waypoint 1, continue in a square through waypoints 2, 3 and 4 then proceed to land back at waypoint 1 all completely autonomously. It continually corrects for environmental variables such as wind and does not need to be "taught" the flight path. Program in the scheduled flight plan and watch.

Should have stuck with the 450, used micro servos for the swashplate, & made it flybarless. Better put some balls on the training gear.

450

The system worked fine on the 450 but we progressed to the 600 for a larger payload capacity. Various camera systems and a radar unit need to be carried, non of which is shown here.

Very cool work.

Once you've written all the academic documentation, are you going to release it? We need more well-documented source materials to support the hobby and the photographic industry... the more people who play with this stuff, the more it all accelerates alternative solutions and improves safety. I hope this is not one of those things that's paid for by the taxpayers via military grant, and nobody but the military gets the benefit in the long run.

The thesis has already been defended so I'll ask about it's availability.
The exciting part of this project is that the hardware cost is well within the budget of a serious modeler. It's certainly not cheap but this aircraft rtf was no more expensive than say, a competitive 40% IMAC setup.

Radar

A separate group is developing a radar system capable of tracking the velocity of passing cars while the helicopter hovers. The little 450 would have no way of carrying that. A MA spectra has also been flown manually, but the 600E represents a much better value for parts. You can almost buy Align parts at walmart
