Installed the GV-1 governor in my P50 today - running great - did my first loops and rolls - head speed at 1600 (much easier than the Blade 400)

Stuck some loops inverted for 5-10secs and then noticed a ratchety sound and vibration.

Landed and found a shredded main gear (missing 30% of the teeth)

Any ideas?

thanks

I just finished my Pantera. Ready to fly. Lately I have been seeing posts about some problems with the main gear shredding. Is there something I need to know about the main gear before I fly and was not covered in the instructions?

This is related to an issue with a prior production run, e.g. not an issue with any machines purchased this year. I've spoken to this fellow and indeed the heli in question was purchased from another guy who indeed purchased it before this production run - no question. So, no worries.

New runs are ok.
JB had a glitch and as you can see. He fixed it for you.
Go fly and enjoy the rush.

ok - just replaced the pinion (and clutch bell) as per John.
(I guess there was an older batch that didnt mesh with the main gear properly - this machine is 3rd hand - with some new parts - still works well)

note - this didn't require spitting the frames - I dropped the motor and the old one came right out (after loosing the keeper on the top of the start shaft)- the new one was snug - had to dress it a bit to fit the bearing - but it went in ok

flying next

Good deal.
You should have no problems in flight. You may see a bit of white dust from the gears seating. This is normal.

that did the trick - 5 flights later the gear still looks good and a little wear in dust - which led me to.............

my first flips - - what a riot - and easier than I thought the'd be

my head speed is 1600 (likely a little low) - but the Pantera still handled it no problem and then.....

I did a off center (really crappy loop) that I should of bailed on but didnt - came out a a weird angle - just to right it about 20ft above the ground - the engine bogged and it hit the ground pretty much level - but a little hard - luckily it was a muddy soy bean field - so apart from having to wipe chunks of mud (literally) of the main blades and canopy and flip over a blade that somehome inverted the blade holder - I started and it was fine! - it was soft but does show how the Pantera holds together and can take some abuse - went back to flips and some inverted flight....

then had some big vibration in the head - thought I had thrown a link but after landing found the main shaft upper bearing sitting on top of the upper bearing block (the whole shaft would slop back and forth - but didnt come apart and had an easy landing)

reseated the bearing and flew again

thread locker for this? - blue or red

all in all an entertaining day

Better check the bearing block orientation, and the security of the collar. Don't fly again before atending to this!

It's just that bearings shouldn't ever be able to come out.

the Pantera is one tough beast - I crashed again today (after half a dozen flights - multiple flips, freestyle etc etc)

came down much harder than yesterday (again pushed the collective too hard and bogged the motor after bailing a maneuver close to the ground) - but came in mostly level with little forward speed

- a whole bunch of linkages came loose (snapped back on fine)
- dented (but usable tail boom)
- bent boom supports
- a bit of mud here and there
- loose servo
- broken tail skid

thats it (the mains and tail was fine - electronics ok - didn't break the carbon blades)

spent 10mins reseating and checking all the critical stuff

flew it again - the tracking wasn't even off

did a couple of more flips etc and landed

cheers - J

Nice to know we have a few new pilots.
The Pantera will only fly as good as you do.
I remember when I was crashing the Tiger MKII.
All of you are in the curve of learning.
If your not flying...Then your not trying.
