My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Two questions right now for my Swift 620 SE:

- Should I adjust the tension of the belt by pulling the tail gear box back a little. For now I just tightened it as far forward as it goes (so the belt is as loose as possible). The manual doesn't say anything about ajusting belt tension, but I have the impression than a little tighter might not harm

- Should the gears or belt be lubricated


PS: I've decided to stop my build thread as the build is over and first test flights are conclusive!

the belt should be fairly snug the firt's flight as it will stretch

after break in your belt should keep it tension afterwards

It's strange there's nothing in the manual towards this.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		For lube use a silicone spray available at the automotive department of most stores like Wal-Mart. That will be a dry lube and will not attract dirt and will eliminate static electricity.

Don’t use anything like WD40 as it has chemicals that will rot the belt. It will also attract dirt and cause goo buildup.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Of course it needs to be tightened so as not to slip.

How tight is tight enough ?
Most people hang the weight of the heli by holding the tail boom to get the proper tension.

I personaly tighten the belt so there is a bit of drag when I turn the belt.Then I just check that it doesn't slip by holding the rotor head and trying to turn the tail rotor.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		The caution with belt tension on toothed belts that turn delrin pulleys, is that it is better to be a little too loose then a little too tight.

The tighter it is the more energy it takes to turn it. Also if you run too tight the pulleys and belts become important parts to monitor closely, as they will wear far more rapidly. If too tight they will also cause the pulleys to get so hot that they will get soft and melt.

Try to make them as loose as you can without slippage in flight. It may surprise you how loose and free running a toothed belt can be while still not slipping under the loading of a tail rotor. I alway set mine just so that thye wil not ping against the tail boom under load.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Well, I guess I'll relosen the belt again.

At first, the tail gear box was pushed against the tube, and from what I could see there wasn't anything slipping.

It just happened than when I was "hand spinning" the head I could hear a "click-click" sound which I figured was the belt hitting the tube (or hitting itself). This sound also occured when I shaked the heli up and down (by hand).

So, I thought, maybe I should tighten it a little, so I pulled to gear box back (about 1mm). Then when I "hand spinned" the rotor, there was no noise (and none when shaking it either).

Any comments on this belt issue? Would you say I should tighten it again.?



PS :For the lube I'll go this lunch time for some "silicone spray" or "non petroleum lube". I do find the mechanincs a little stiff (although silent).

PUSH the belt down toward itself forward off tail gear (easiest place) and it should be loose enought to travel half the distance of the tail gear diameter, but not touching each other at all.


Spin main head and count how many full rotations main blades make.


Not enought and its too tight (anything less than 7 spins for me is too tight on 550 blades)


You will find a happy medium.


I have never sprayed any of my belts.

That is a tried and true way of doing it.

The caution is the surface the heli is on at the time. Be sure it is just a normal wood surface and not something as smmoth as glass for example.

oldfart : I don't see what the surface has to do with it? However, I have rubber things on my skids, so it doesn't slide anyway...
