I have a trainer with blade holders that are flat on the top and bottom. I saw a trainer the other day and the blade holders had 2 ridges on the top and bottom that run the length of the blade holder. Are these a better blade holder and should I change mine.

The ones you saw are the reinforced grips. Vario has also added new grips with a 5mm bolt hole. Changing from your version to the newer version is not required as long as you stay within the recommended rpm range for the blades.

Don't know how old your grips are but my advice is change them to the newer style. Just had my Benzin tear itself to bits midair after a blade departed!! dia 1780 @ 1450 RPM. Ten year old 4mm blade grips... (Did think should I change them when I was re-building her, wish I had now!!)

Have added up the bits to put straight and I'll be ordering a new kit, new blades, new gyro and a new exhaust monday... Expensive mistake!!

Happy landings!

The stated RPM on the head for that blade disc size is 1200.

Thanks Joe
It worries me that the safety margin is so small then!
20% overspeed and the head flies apart...
Still think I should have changed the grips...
Hindsight hey...

In the above example you say a 20% overspeed is only a slight marginal increase in RPM,but this equates to a 46% increase in centrifugal force on the rotor hub.Any increase in RPM is squared according to the equatio
Centrifugal force F equals weight of blade divided by acceleration due to gravity multiplied by angular velocity in radians/sec squared multiplied by radius of gyration of blade.
(how does one use a keyboard to write equations?i've no idea)

I agree, but since we work on rotational speeds I was still only 20% over (You could probably reach that in a hard pushed auto).
I still believe the issue was the aged, old style 4mm holders, not the I.M.H.O. marginal overspeed.

Anyhow, the new tool arrives tomorrow. GV1's going to be at 1200 on this beast ;-)
