After soem 4 years I have only 2 weeks ago begun to do nose in's and do them successfully. At age 49 I got interested in scale heli's and it was one big learning curve, yes I used to fly a full size bolkow but flying the model takes much more skill. Here in wales weather is rarely favourable, and you could discount the first summer as all I really did was learn to hover it standing behind. Three louse subsequent summers with bad weather and rare opportunities to practice except on a sim but I am there. With the exception of one individual who told me if I could'nt master it the first season I should chuck it in, I have this to say, I am glad I ignored your advice and stuck with the advice of the majority.

It really is rewarding when we finally see that we can do nose-in. I'm glad you have made it, it is much more fun now, as we can say we can somewhat fly the heli, or will learn to fly much better from here on out.

Everyone learns at their own pace no one should set a time limit on your progress you should go about it as you are comfortable with it.
As long as you are happy and have a good time with it everytime you go out and fly good for you to me its all about going out and having fun with it.
Relax and enjoy.

nose in

thansk for those positive replies. I have to say I ahve always enjoyed the interim period getting to nose in, but was conscious that I needed to work also and not stay completely inside my comfort zones.
Next real challenge is flying at distance from myself and nailing those nose on hover landings without the training aids.

nose-in is something pilots of full size helis will Never encounter! )

Congratulations on your progress bolkow. Whilst I have to admit that the 4 year timespan is quite protracted from my own point of view (perhaps Lancashire has better weather than Wales....nah! ), model helis are a hobby and progression/enjoying the hobby has no time limit, apart from peer pressure! I am glad that you decided to stick with it - no point having a hobby if you're not happy with it.

I first began flying a collective pitch single rotor heli some two years ago (April 2007) and now I'm comfortable doing basic loops and rolls, yet the friend who introduced me to the hobby is still at the side-in hovering about stage. I don't mean this to come across as boasting - it isn't! I'm just stating facts.
However, that's with 30 size nitro helis - he does some pretty mean circuits with the Blade mSR - FFF and nose in too! Likewise with the sim. It has to be the pucker factor of controlling a larger, less crashworthy machine.

You mentioned that you like scale helis - I guess I lean more towards that aspect rather than the 3D flying, but even in scale there is moer than one side to that coin. For example, it seems to me that many people want to use a rate gyro for the tail and couple that with quite a slow headspeed, letting the heli mush around as it where. Me? I like headspeed, headspeed and heading hold. I have accepted the fact that one will never get the proper blade noise or visual rotor effect compared to full size, from a model some ten times smaller. I like the heli to give me all the precision it can without me resorting to a HeliCommand box etc. Indeed my hat is off to those who can fly a mushy heli in a precise scale manner! All I have to do to get the heli to behave in a scale manner is learn how to manouvre it in a scale manner, coordinating turns and so forth. I suppose this stems from whenever I see a full size heli like a Sea King, or the EC145 air ambulance in a hover, it does not mush around, it is rock solid..

Anyway - sorry if I went off on a rant I was wanting to give you an insight into my version of the hobby.

Happy Flying!!

Tach.

It's all about having fun

I have been flyin about 2 yrs now.I told my friend jake I was getting discouraged because it felt like I was not learning fast enough like my learning curve was now sorta straight.I can hover nose in side in tail in. I can do stationary flips and rolls.I can do nose down funnels and tail down counterclockwise.I can do aileron and elevator tic tocs. I can do inverted forward flight. I know that is alot of learning in 2 years but it seems like the last 6 months it just takes forever to learn something new so I have been bummed out. Then jake Brought it all back into perspective when he said " your having fun aren't you" Well I had just about forgot how fun it is,because i was so intent on learning what I didn't know that I was forgetting how much I already learned. So when I go fly now I don't focas so much on learning something new but more on flyin what I have learned and hopefully the rest will come with more enjoyment instead of frustration

Fly it ! Crash it ! Rebuild it ! Repeat as needed !! Everett

nose in

I think the 4 years was a combination of a number of factors, Married with 3 kids, and live in wales, the summers since I went in to the hobby have been awful so on good flying days the family tend to want to do things also. Add to that my age 51, old dogs take time to learn new tricks.
All in all I have four choppers now
Venture 30 with 460 flights on it
Raptor 50se with 200 flights done
Raptor 30 v2 with around 33 flights done
and a graupner bolkow with 70 flights done.

Looking at the flight totals that is a total of 700 flights give or take a few, so yes if I packed that amount into a shorter space of time it may have taken less and cut down on the bits you loose if you dotn keep at it all the time.

regards

Bolkow

With this hobby there is always something new to learn. If I ever got to the point where it was all easy I'd do something else.

That's what I like about it. I know that there will always be some new maneuver I need to master. And once you master that one someone will come out with a new one.

Very Cool I am 58 and have advanced more in the past 6 months coming back after 2 years than I have in years of RCing. Starting to move it around nose in and slow piros in diff positions. Using my G2 sim and flying an evo50 with 9c and 7 tm. Flying loops and rolls was fun, but now, at my age doing something I've never done before...

God forgive me I love it so !

This shows each pilot has different goals and schedules. We all have outside influences that influence our learning curve. The one thing I can say from my experience is that there are so many levels of learning that I have gone through with helis that really amazes me. I keep finding more and more control in my fingers that I never thought I had. It is very gratifying. For me the learning curve is the best part. I am always looking for more control and smoother flight.

Congratulations on you successes. Very enjoyable post.

Congrats. I'm a 3rd year flier and I can't do it. The pucker factor gets overwhelming. I've done flips w/ the trex 450 but can't get past the fear. SIM and it's nothing. Reality is a different story.

I need helirehab before I'm livin under a bridge.
