If you could build your dream field box/helicopter stand, what would it look like? Wood/metal? I'm thinking of building one, possibly more, but I need as many ideas as I can get. Nothing is too extreme, so let your imagination run wild.

Thanks,

Chad

My ideal dream flight box would take itself out of the basement and into the van all with a simple verbal command. Once out at the flying field it would discharge itself from the van and up unto the field table all by itself and proceed to fuel the helicopter with out any further prodding. Once that is accomplished it would proceed to make sure all batteries are fully charged up, all automatically. Not necesarily in this order, but still this would be my dream field box. Oh and it would also be fully stocked with every concievable part required (for free.)
Failing all of the above, I will stick with the plastic plano toolbox I bought from Home Depot and outfitted with a 14Ahr battery, Triton Battery Charger, Hobbico Fool pump and a solar panel to keep the battery topped up anytime the sun shines. + almost all necessary tools to effect any adjustment or repair that may be required.

I lost my infamous tag line.

I use the Plano 777

http://www.cabelas.com/information/...Series-Box.html

The small door on the RHS houses my starter and wand. The small upper door houses my battery and power panel. The puul outs have all my tools and beneath the top lid I have small guide boxes with spare screws, parts etc.

Jerry,

How tight a fit is your starter in that RH door? I have a standard-size starter with ten AE cells (just a skosh larger than AA) wrapped around it. If it will fit in there, looks like I have found a new "flight box"...

It is a never-ending search. In 16 years, I'll bet I've owned a dozen or more different flight boxes. These days, what I need is more of a tool box. I use a Dubro can for fuel, and carry my transmitter in its own case. Right now, I'm using a huge plastic tool box I found at Wally World. But this Plano is more compact.

Looks like a lunch-time trip to Sports Academy is called for...

I want to thank everyone for their responses regarding plastic tool boxes, but I'm looking at building my field box/heli stand from the ground up. I've got all the woodworking/metal working equipment already to build just about anything(square/round tubing bender, metal lathe, mill, sheet metal brake, Tig/Mig welder, plasma cutter, etc.). What I'm considering is a field box with some sort of telescopic/fold-up work stand built in. I already have a few things in mind, but I'm looking for as many ideas as I can get. If we can come up with something feasible, I will consider mass production.

Thanks,
Chad

Field Box

Take a look at planepals.com for some ideas on what you want.

It's very similar to another box built by Custom Woodcraft used by the plane guys. I know Custom Woodcraft builds heli pads on top of the box now for the heli guys.

It's heavy, but everthing folds flat and the legs fold under for transportation. It's nice to be able to work on the heli at normal height instead of getting down to work on it.

Personally, I have a Craftsman plastic tool box that houses my MA pocket starter, Radio south pro-driver, Sirius Pro Charger and assorted tools. We have tables where I fly, so no need for anything elaborate. I have a fold up picnic table for funfly's that seats 4 and folds flat 14 x 36" ??? - it has a handle. For a few hours of flying, you want to go lighter rather than bigger / heavier.

As for me, I'm waiting for the Supermodel assisted flight box...

Where's that damn G2 thread, that's a good suggestion!

Disregard, Jerry.

I picked up a Plano 737 at lunch. This is the same box as the 777, except it has three compartmented drawers instead of the two boxes in the lower main compartment. I removed the drawers, made a nest out of some closed-cell foam sheets I had, epoxied those puppies in place, and voila! Instant protected spot for the 9Z, with enough room left on the side for my Ace Voltmeter II and MA optical heli tach.

The starter fits perfectly in that smaller bottom area. The two areas above the lower compartments, along with the covered compartments in the lid, leave plenty of room for tools and incidentals.

This is great; one less item (tx case) to load/unload.

Thanks for the tip.

closell,

Keep in mind that a wood box of any size is going to weigh a ton; BEFORE you load it up with goodies.

I had one of those Custom Woodcraft boxes that pliotError mentioned. Beautiful thing, it was, and could carry everything you could possibly need. It also nearly gave me a hernia, not to mention being so large that finding a place to put it in the vehicle where it wouldn't trash the models in a wreck was problematical.

Just food for thought...

4 3/8W x5 1/4Hx9 5/8D are the dimensions of the compartment. I have a hangar 9 HD starter in there no problem, but I'm not sure w/ the battery packs your talking about attached.

Another important point that was made about field boxes on a post serveral months ago was that a field box is for flying and minor repairs and not for major repairs. That being said, its more to your advantage to be able to carry it easily then to have every repair item in the book. Repairs should be made on the bench not in the field.

Oaksmith,
I'm a good BOYSCOUT and I come prepared. It beats having to pack up early and drive ten miles home because I forgot a the whatshewhoszit on the workbench at home.

Well, tried my new flight/tool/box/transmitter case/ et. al. at the Birmingham event this week-end. I was somewhat underwhelmed.

Every time I removed or replaced the tx from the bottom compartment, it seemed that SOMETHING was in the way of opening the door. I work out of the bed of my truck at fly-ins. Too cheap to buy a table & EZ-Up, but not brazen enough to cadge table space out of whomever I'm bumming shade from...

Anyway, I was also not pleased with the fact that, no matter how careful I was, I still managed to bang a switch or two when putting in or taking the tx out. Its only a matter of time...

So, another good idea that didn't work out. That really is an excellent case that came with the radio; if a bit large. But my voltmeter and optical tach fit in there just fine.

Back to the drawing board. Remember that primo gear bag we got as a registration gift at IRCHA back in '96 or so? Still have mine, and I dug it out when I got home today. Think I'll experiment with it again, since the tool box I was using before this tackle box brainstorn struck was/is just too big for my tastes.

Man, this is getting to be worse than a woman and shoes...

It was a scale get-together. Greg McNair prevailed upon Harkey to allow us the use of the field for an impromptu gathering of old friends and new with our scalers.

I guess "event" wasn't the right word; it was just a relaxed time with no competition. Just a lot of flying, both the actual and hangar variety. There was no official announcement; word spread among the southeastern scale community.

I've been using one of those Rubbermaid
brand plastic stepstool/toolbox things
I got at the local Ace h/w store for $18.

A bit of Dremel'ing and plumbing later
and it fits a gallon jug externally,
12v gel cell, power panel, pump, starter
w/ 2x 7cell pack, tool tray, storage
area, KSJ heli clips on top to hold the
model and get it off the ground and
a place to park my behind

I really don't understand the people that
want to be able to field strip an entire
XCell at the field and bring every tool
known to man including vise, test
indicator and granite surface plate.

field box

really like mine has all nessesary tools/equip i need for a day of flying
except for fuel

works great and costs approx $20. has foam inserts and dividers that come with it so you can customize it for your applications.. on the back side of the lid/not visible i mounted my battery charger/cycler

oh and that junk in the radio compartment has been replaced..to futaba..
so it only takes two trips to the stands/pilot area.. once for the box other hand fuel, and next trip two heli's.. ready to go ...
[the field i fly at has tables} already there..

She's old (early '80's) but still going strong...all aluminum, room for 7 Ah Gel-cell, gallon of fuel, Boxer fuel pump, starter (w/ extention!), tools, bottle of cleaner, cleaning rags, glow ignitor(s), extra Tx module, nuts-bolts-screws box , and of course; my neck strap! Oh yeah; a small First Aid kit and a Hobbico field charger.

2 1/2 lbs. empty and 13-14 lbs. with transmitter in it's cradle.

Heli in one hand and flight box in the other...single trips from the car to the pits are possible (if it weren't for all the other crap...chairs, tables, cooler, etc. !

22" deep - 20" tall - 10" wide.

At home I remove the two drawers and put 'em on the workbench so I only have one set of tools to keep up with!
