Hello everyone

Well, the next day after rerouting wires I went out to see if rerouting wires got rid of the drift of the tail to the left. Anyway, I was moving the rudder left to right quickly to see how the tail stopped. I did this several times then I left the tail pointed toward me to see if the drift showed up. There was a slight drift still. So I decided to get some altitude, went from 6 feet off the ground to 20 feet. I did a couple more quick left to right movements of the tail. I stopped the tail to do a quick piro to the right with the tail toward me. Before I could the piro, I lost tail control. As the tail started to come around I dropped the trottle slightly. I tried to keep the heli level as it came down but the heli landed slightly to the back with the tail buried in dirt and facing me.

Looking back I should have hit the throttle hold to bring down the rpms but still have pitch control.

Here is the list of brokent parts:
Both tail grips destroyed

rear landing strut destroyed

and cracked main blades

There was no indication of a boom strike. The damage to the main blades would indicate a strike to the area of the horizontal fins, but everything was alright there. I do recall seeing one of the tail blade grips and rotor blade breaking off and being thrown to my left about 25 feet then the other blade grip and rotor blade being thrown about 15 feet at about 2 o'clock to me.

A couple of days later after getting the tail blade grips replaced and replacing the stock rotor blades with carbon blades, I went out to fly. Needless to say, there was alot of vibration in the tail. After taking apart the tail I discovered the tail shaft to have a slight wobble. After replacing the tail shaft there was still some wobble but not as bad and then found that the tail shaft bearings to have a lot of play. I am thinking that the inner surface of the bearings have a flat spot(s) on them from the crash.

if the tail hit the ground I'd inspect and likely just replace all of the bearings in the grips, they're small and it doesn't take much for them to incur damage.

as far as the drift, usually it is a vibration related problem.

to loose tail control, could be a servo gone bad, loose connection, or less likely, the gyro having a problem.

good luck!

More Broken Parts

Hello Everyone

Along with the damage to the tail shaft and bearings, I also did find a crack in the tail pitch control arm where it attaches to the tail pitch slider:

The crack is a little hard to see in the photo, but it is on the nearest side of the hole in the picture at the thinest part of the control arm.

Dan - that is what I was thinking about, replace all the bearings in the tail section. I had just replaced the tail grips and bearings, but there still is some slop in the tail. Just got to wait for my order for a complete tail section to come in.

After replacing the tail pitch control arm, I also decided to relocate the header tank to a horizontal position next to the main tank:

Even in that position the front view still shows a sleek profile. But, after three more tanks the aluminum header tank holder did break at the hole:

Not sure if the aluminum holder broke as a result from the stress in the two crashes . Although, in both crashes I did not see/recall hitting the header tank when it was in the original vertical position near the front landing strut. I have since replaced the aluminum header tank holder with a plastic one and kept the it in horizontal position next to the main tank.

I suggest adding more tail delay within your gyro to more dampen the harshness of piro stops and reversing. I automatically add 50% delay and never have/had an issue - 50% or more. I personally feel the tail performance is not compromised with adding this much delay. The gyro delay also helps gears. It kinda goes without saying, but heli's aren't indestructible.

Sorry about your crash, Everett. It happens to the best of us.
