Any sport flyers own a MSR ? Would it make a fun heli for indoor practice in the Winter ? Currently flying a 4#3B in the living room when it's not fit to fly larger helis outdoors.

I think so. I bought it to have as that little heli for indoors... that manuvored better than a small coaxial... and it is every bit of that.

It is also surprisenly durable. The little thing can bang into almost anything at almost any speed, and if you cut power to the blades before impact... get right back up and do it again (sometime you have to realign the batt, servo gears, motor/ main gear, etc.).

It is also a blast to fly outside... if it is calm out.

I love mine for indoors - even outside in up to 3-5mph or so I'd guess. I have the cheap hobby city packs and get 4-5 flights a night at least on mine - keeps the fingers in tune

Any chance they'll ever release a CP version?

Also, do you have a link to the HobbyCity lipos that fit?

They may release a CP version... but my guess if they do it will be awhile down the road. Also it would maybe take away from the Blade CP sales... so maybe not because of that.

If they do... I am not sure I would want one... because it would be soo small. The Blade CP is not an easy heli to fly... the mSR is.

Remember... the smaller a CP heli gets... the harder it is to fly. Found that out the hard way... when I started with a CP and then a Trex450 (although I really like my 450 now that I can fly)

Horizon did some engineering changes to a fixed pitch heli overall... and that is what helps the mSR fly better then those before it. Maybe they will do the same with a small CP in the future... but as of now... this one is the small one to get if you want a durable stable little fixed pitch heli..

I've got over 125 indoor flights on my msr, and haven't had my Axe CP, T-rex 450 or 550 Hurricane in the air once! Ah, indoors, no bugs, no bad weather & no traveling to the field! Check out my paper fuse from sky guy! Gotta love this heli.

Nice looking fuse !

What are people getting for typical flying times without over discharging the battery ?

How long are main and tail motors lasting ?

Thanks !

I bought one today, and I didn't think it was much fun. What's the point in buying a helicopter when all it does is hover and do pirouttes? I'll wait for the CP version.

With the mSR, when you try and do something simple that doesn't require negative pitch like a stall turn, it can't do it.

You go full speed forward and pull back into a vertical leg up. You decrease the rotor speed so that it will continue vertically, give it 180 degrees worth of rudder to flip it around at the top of the stall, and then give back elevator to level out--it can't do it. The problem is that since it is fixed pitch, now the rotor speed has decreased such that you have no more control over the cyclic and the helicopter just mushes down towards the ground.

A fixed pitch helicopter should have no problem doing a roll or a loop if it has plenty of altitude. But the mSR is made to be very stable at center stick. Even with the balls on the outer links, 90% expo on all of the controls, and 135% ATV on all 3 controls--it still doesn't have enough control authority to do anything fun.

As I said in my other post, this helicopter is pretty much just for simple stuff like hovering or maybe figure 8's. It would be ideal for someone trying to learn how to hover nose in.

and fly pretty darn quick foward flight, and/ or circuits.

I read your for sale post also, and read how you tried to roll it . I am wondering if you understood what you bought?

To roll a CP heli "with out" negative pitch, you need to have strong forward momentum... and be as close to 0° as you can when you roll - and even then you better have some altitude. Try it on the Sim to see what I mean.

This thing is not set for 0° pitch to start with... because it is designed to create lift as the head speed increases. You might be able to loop it if you had enough altitude and speed... but that is about as good as it will get with any FP heli... especially one this size.

The fixed positive pitch it does have designed in... will also start to work against you as you start to nose/ roll over upside down... the lift will then be pulling you down instead of up. The best you could do is cut power when you are upside down to slow the blades down, but the blades will still be spinning and working against you.

Truly not trying to be rude with you here... but you didn't do your homework.

Well, I give is a 1.5 or maybe 2 out of 10 on the fun scale--but then again I'm probably pretty biased due to my time spent with a flybarless Trex 450 Pro so perhaps I was just hoping for something similar yet "living room sized".

That being said, the design of the mSR is pretty good. I like how E-flite has all the replacement parts available, and I especially like how it is a bind-n-fly with the Spectrum/JR radios.

I bound it to my JR 12X no problem. The 5-in-1 board is nicely thought out such that all of the valuable parts are isolated from damage. There is even a rate gyro included such that on pitch pumps the tail holds. This is a big step up from the Air Hogs ultra micro helicopters.

Still, the tail gyro is not a heading hold gyro such that it will not hold in fast flight backwards. The only real stability that comes from fast forward flight is due to the weathervaning effect of the tail fin.

I guess I'l be waiting for the mCP to be released.

I just read your second post... which you must have wrote while I was writing mine... and you are correct about Horizon building in stability around center stick. If you look at the blade design close... you can see in the pitch/ design of the blades how they worked thm to help with that. I am thinking it is for both easier hovering, and because the heli is so darn small.

Yes, it is incredibly stable for such a small helicopter. I really think it is a good design. I don't want to disagree with that. They did a great job incorporating a lot of simplicity and stability into a small, inexpensive package.

I am a big fan of pretty much anything Horizon makes, and they did a good job on this helicopter, but if you are a high-performance 3D pilot, I'm not sure if you're going to have a lot of fun with this heli. Yes, it is kind of cute, but the cuteness only lasts so long.

Yah... cute is a pretty good word for it... but you gotta admit that for buzzing around the house... it is pretty manageable and fun!

After I got the mCX... I got bored with it after about 15 flights or so. It is practically brand new... and would be selling it... if it was not for deciding to let the kids fly it when they get old enough/ want to.

I truly kinda expected the same thing for the mSR. I knew it was going to be better than the mCX - but the wierd think is I just keep charging and flying batts through it. Most nights I will fly out the 4 charged packs... put it away... and then a night or two later finding myself wanting to do it all over again

It like it for that... but I think the wife and kids are over the newness of it

I programed in a rudder to aileron mix
my house isn't very big but I haveblast getting this lil sucka upto speed then funneling out just before it hits the wall
very agile I gotta say and can be very stable if you want

Anyone else using their Radio program mixes ?

Hmmm......

Well, after reading many opinions about this helicopter here and on other sites, I'm wondering if it's for me. It might be too stable in a hover and I really don't want a heli that does odd things when I give cyclic controls or when I let go of the sticks. Have I misunderstood someone's comments ? Maybe the LHS has one for demo like the the larger Blade coaxial they used for demos in the store. Then I can try it myself.

Perhaps I got a really good specimen, but I really like the way my Walkera 4#3B flies. I didn't at first, I first thought it was "squirrely" and overly sensitive. After a few dozen flights I was pretty comfortable with it and began orientation practice through the cold Winter months. I perfected nose-in hovering with it and I now have total confidence doing nose-in or any side-in with my larger helis outdoors(I don't get to fly often when Wx is nice). Now I do figure-8s, all kinds of circuits in the living room no matter what the Wx outdoors, day or night.

Also, I don't own a Spectrum Tx so I'd have to buy the MSR RTF version.

Someone please correct me if I've misinterpreted or missed something.

Honestly, just go to the LHS, fly one and then decide.
