So I built one of those HK-T500s from Hobby City for less than $300 ($298) and I must admit, it flies wonderfully!! The basic kit was $54 and I added 2 Turnigy batteries, ESC, Motor, 4 metal gear digital servos (all from Hobby City), used AR6000 receiver and a Mystery gyro (401 clone). I followed the TREX 500 build instructions, and fired it up yesterday. After flying 1/2 a battery I did an inspection and all is well!! I flew the remainder of the battery without incident.
I share this not to debate about Align V.S. clone; my point is, if you are looking to build a nice flying 500 sized heli with a budget in mind, AND if parts availability is important to you, this may be the ticket…it is for me.

Thanks,

KT

I think they are carbon frames. It is hard to tell in the pics and the specs dont say. I remember reading the HK "Twitter" thing on their site and thought I remember him saying they were carbon.

The frames are...

Polymer fiber (plastic impregnated with reinforcing fiber). Don't know the weight or durability. Time will tell. I'll let you know.

Did you replace the swash and tailservo mount?
Or did they ship you the Rev2 versions of these?

The swash was hitting the arms at deflection and the servo mount had been cut too thin around some holes and was breaking off.

it is interesting that you can do that for under $300.

that was unheard of in the not too distant past.

Looks like a good heli if your a sport flyer. It has a full plastic head that im sure would blow apart with my flying,do they make any cnc parts for this .

Looks nice, very interesting, Im sure myself along with many others are interested to know how things go after a few flights, I think since you only finished building this heli yesterday its a bit early to start getting to exited, I think a few good reports as to

1: If the heli will hold up for more than just a few flights.

2: How well the heli will hold up to some 3d manouvers.

If it passes these two I think theyl start seeling em like hotcakes/ or maybe I should say "selling em like Turnigies"

Please keep this thread updated.

As far as CNC upgrades and durability keep in mind...

The parts on this heli are 100% interchangable with the TREX 500... 100%. I'll keep you posted on how it goes...

Did you read any of the reviews?Heres one that caught my eye

"Customer Rated 11/08/2009
Falcon5 |

Ok this kit is Good for "Hovering to, Normal flying only with low head speed". If package with Typhoon, better to stick to 4 cell or tune to lower head speed if using 6 Cell. Otherwise this heli will Break apart right in front of your eyes. Try to stay clear is my advise. Otherwise for price and if you mod it a bit, it "

Just thought I would let you know incase you didn't read any reviews .If the Trex 500 head parts fit this it should be a good flyer, just not a fan of the plastic head banging 3D.

Trex 600N/hyper 50/MP5, Revmax,Spartan DS760/JR DS8900G,3 Align DS610's.

There are lots of untold factors that go into a statement like that...

Was Loctite used everywhere? Was the head speed to high. All fasteners checked? Rush job?? The part specifications (TREX 500) and quality are not condusive to this heli spontaniously flying apart. There are thing we're not being told here.

I read that also, but some of the crap you read on those HK reply things are just ridiculous.
Have a look at some of the claims people make about there lipos, stuff like "I run these packs in my trex 600e and get 15 minutes of crazy 3d!! and only put back in 1000 mahs!!"

Or one I read where the guy was complaining about a ducted fan that the he had sent 3 esc`s back to HK as none of them worked, he did not think to lower the trim on his tx a few clicks to get it to initialize.

Those kind of write ups like flyinghigh450 mentioned do put you off when you read them though, Ide prefer to hear some reports here on RR about how good or bad these helis are.

The thing that worries me the most about this heli is the price, just too cheap, I just dont see how you can produce quality parts(that will hold together) that cheaply.

Yeah thats why I was talking about the plastic head.I had 2 Trex 450XL CCPM helis (all plastic head/tail) and the head blew apart quite a few times so plastic heads don't stand up to hard flying. After asking about the head I went to the site and thats the first review I seen, its crazy cause he said about the same thing I said (good for sport flying with the plastic head, thats it).Im not knocking it and would love to know how it works out but IMO a cnc head would be a must for 3D/idleup .If you ever seen one blow apart you'll know why.

I understand the price consern Spitfire 1 but ask yourself...

Aside from the substantial marketing and endorsment payout that Align has, for all we know Align and the HK could be made at the same factory - much like the multi-badged TVs, DVD players, etc. made in China. Seriously, Align is cranking out thousands of copies daily, and at their labor rate, etc. do you really think a basic Align 500 kit costs $450??
With automated stamping and CNC machining, stock is fed in one end of a machine and out comes a completed product at the other end. Side frame costs what... pennies in material and energy, let alone the poor guy getting $9.00 a day to stock the machine. Think of it this way, more work goes into making and certifying a hardened precision aerospace .79 cent fastener than does machining an RC heli main shaft, but we would never pay $6.99 for a bolt like we do for the shaft. I believe advertising and paying endorment fees is where the our $$ go... and I can live with that. The ongoing Turnigy battery discussion is a prime example of what I'm attempting to say as well.

The HK500GT comes with, "High rigidity 2024 alloy main frame."

But then there's an upgrade C/F frame with metal bearing blocks.....

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/..._Main_Frame_set

and metal tail blade grips for the HK500...
