Trim should not be used in the rudder, it must be mechanically adjusted.

Make sure the gv-1 rpm cable is plugged into aux4, then go into the program side where you select a model and make sure Aux4 is assigned to the flight mode switch.

Gv-1 on/off should be in the gear channel.

On the gv-1 speed screen, your speed should change to rs1, rs2 and rs3 when you go from normal to idle up 2.

For idle up curves, do the following:

100, 37, 29, 23, 29, 37, 100 for idle up 1
100, 40, 32, 26, 32, 40, 100 for idle up 2.

Fine tune them if needed when you turn the gv-1 on and off to see if they match your selected idle up 1 and 2 speeds in a hover and on the ground at 0 pitch.

Actually, you don't want it set to ZERO, you want it set to about 4 or 5 degrees to counter the torque from the engine during hovering and flight. It probably won't matter anyway,

I think it does matter because the servo will have a different response in one direction (mechanically) than it will in the other from the equilibrium point.

Well today was a complete bummer, after having such a great afternoon on Thursday and really thinking I was making progress today was such a disappointment.
Despite the fact that I haven't touched a single thing, other than obviously my pre flight checks, the engine suddenly developed an air leak causing huge flucuations in the revs and the engine to run hot. I managed to track this down to the insulator block and remedy that and then there was a probelm with the low end.
If anyone can help, yet again, I would be very grateful, the heli will tick over fine and the servo and throttle arm will move but there's absolutely no response from the engine until you get the throttle up to half stick. Could it be that the low end jet is blocked, I'm not sure whether it would tick over with a blocked low end jet or is the tick over seperate to this?
It looks as if I'm going to have my first lesson in carb stripping and cleaning, I may even buy another one so that I have a spare to swap out at the field if I encounter problems. Stripping a carb at the field and risking losing some small but essential part doesn't appeal to me.

Do I stick with the 643/4, can't remember which I have it's the no choke version or is it worth trying the WT-257/WT-488/813. I'd really like to know if I coud run something like a WYK-33 with a rotary throttle body rather than a butterfly type carb?

At least start with a simple disassembly of the carb and clean the screen and flush through. I couldn't face the idea of digging out all the deeper bits and my reading suggests you need the right tools anyway.. but just flushing it all out (I used straight petrol instead of special carb cleaners) and blew through it with compressed air.. it sorted out one of my carb's issues. the other still had troubles and I swapped out the carb for a spare...It would have been about £10 for a carb kit and £34 for a new carb from ebay - not worth the stress.
And then the source coil died anyway

throttle linkage

Take off the air cleaner and watch the butterfly as you opperate the throttle with the radio. I had this problem before where the setscrew on the throttle arm loosened and the shaft wasn't turning with the arm.
good luck,
Paul

Thanks for the suggestions, I've had the air filter off and checked that the butterfly is moving and it's fine but despite the butterfly opening the carb doesn't pick up until mid stick.
I shall order a new carb tomorrow and try and blow the current one through in the meantime. I e mailed Walbro and they suggested I could try a WYK 94-1 rotary bodied carb. The main problem I foresee with this would be how to open the throttle as it appear's to be a cable pull.

Well if it's not one thing it's another, I took my carb off and blew it through in the vain hope this would cure the problem of no pick up at the bottom end.
I ran the heli up and tried it and it didn't seem an awful lot better so I stopped it and had a play with my throttle curve to see if this made any difference. Well stupidly I didn't do my pre flight check having only just run it and whoops it fired straight up at half throttle. I hit the throttle cut and nothing zilch, diddly squat. I was in two minds whether to let go of the head and run or hang on for dear life. Fortunately before I could make that decision the engine stalled, I just hope it hasn't damaged the clutch.
Back up on the bench and I then notice that the throttle servo is not working. I tried plugging it directly into the RX and even tried putting it into another channel on the RX but nope completely lifeless. I'm now wondering if this was the cause of my problem, off to my LHS tomorrow to buy a new servo. The servo was a JR DS8231 which as JR quote the torque and speed at 6 volts I assumed would be o.k. running at 6v. It was brand new when I built the heli and considering how much actual flying I've done I'm surprised it's failed so soon.
Anyway lesson learnt on pre flight checks each and every time no matter how short a time between starting. Anyone have any suggestions as to a good throttle servo that will work on 6v, quality rather than price is the priority.

..doesn't have to be 6v .. can always stick a stepdown diode in the line..
..the arguments quoted here before regard what servo can cope with the vibes up the throttle link. Both mine have futaba 9252's but I'm sure everyone's going to chine in with choices..
..If you're into testing stuff then see how well a ds620 copes with it's metal gears. It'd be a real test in that location! (fit a killswitch)..well fit a killswitch anyway.

9252

The futaba 9252's have proven to be super reliable on the throttle with my Spectra, the best record of everything else I tried but nothing lasts forever my 9252 did die and now I'm on the 2nd one (9252).

They do have 8717 servos that are high voltage, but those are expensive. The failed 8231 you should be able to send back to JR and they will replace it for free.

I'm using Hitec's now in my Spectra, my friend gets them and he wanted to see how long they last really under good use which I put all my stuff through...! They have been in there since just after IRCHA when I got them, so time will tell.

Well I replaced the throttle servo with an Align DS620 which I thought was expensive enough jsut to open a throttle. I got it fitted went to the field and second tank I'm back to square one, an air leak causing the revs to rise and fall. Initially I thought it was a mixture problem so I land after only a couple of minutes, richened it up and tried again. At first I couldn't get it to tick over so I had to lean it very slightly on the low end. Tried again and after a couple of minutes, i.e. as soon as the engine got up to temp again, it started hunting again.
I took the carb off and the gaskets were dry as a bone, gave up for the day and flew my boy's T Rex 600, excellent flawless flight. I got the Spectra home and took off the insulator block and it was wet with oil between the block and the cylinder. I' had exactly the same thing happen when it packed up before with a Z-RC alloy block so I'd been using the stock plastic block.
So where do I go from here, I'd previously tried the Permatex Form-A-Gasket or whatever it is and only ended up with brown goo everywhere. I've got to find a way of sealing the intake otherwise the engine is going to get fried again.

Also I know this will make Raja laugh but my super duper MA starter shaft decided to eject the needles from the one way roller bearing today, great buy that was!

Here's what you do

Put the Z-rc insulator back on. Those things are bulletproof and they hardly will ever leak unless you use screws that are too long from the carb side. Worst case scenario get yourself new gaskets for it and go again. If you still don't like it send it to me, I'll send you a couple of stock insulators instead

MA starter shaft? You're using a gasser aren't you? Who needs that? Mine starts every time within a couple of pulls, you've seen it on video

On the lighter side of things, I was out flying my Spectra and 1005 this afternoon and got a new high speed autorotation move today. Fly as fast as you can full bore down the runway at 10 feet, hit throttle hold at the 3/4 point and pull up to a vertical tail stand. It rises to about 30 feet and hangs there for a couple of seconds, before you slide back down tail first and land backwards. Its pretty cool, I think I need to get that on video

Cor! you must get that on video for us.
I liked your backwards auto one I saw the other day - great

Regarding starting - mine starts 1st pull, two light pulls with the choke on and one big one and away she goes.

Use the pull cord and you will even be able to get your `Jewel` refitted - great piece of kit that is as well

Going to the field today to train a guy

Will take the camera and see how good he is in catching the high speed auto on video. I'll shoot several and pick the best one for uploading. Weather is crappy cloudy and colder by 20 degrees, currently 46 here now. Sorry no sun for the movie but that's that.

Got the movies done today

Not the best weather, not my best performance as I was shivering a bit with all the cold wind today temps in the mid 40's, and my camera man wasn't very steady with cameras but at least you'll get the idea

Here are the links for two takes:
