I had the first opportunity to get my V2/V3 out in the open sky yesterday. I went to The Waymart Fall Heli fly-in and flew 6 packs in the Se upgraded V2. I was very happy with the straight line tracking both across the deck and in steep dives. It pulled smoothly out of dives no pitching upward. I am running Gorilla paddles with half weights installed. My 4s/Jazz combo really cranked her fast up high and across the field. What a sight to see.

Last week I did have the first chance to repair the torque tube after a crash. I will admit it was an annoyance to have to pull the gyro off the boom mounting block. I can see how this will be a pain in the XXX. Searching on RR I found this link to a Micro heli gyro mount that is made for the carbon fiber Se V2. It looks good enough to me so I will order it. This seems to lower the gyro so it does not have to be removed in a crash repair.

http://www.microheli.com/product_in...products_id=337

I'll keep you posted how effective this mount is.

Yesterday we had some unusually high winds in our area caused by an 800 mile swirling front over Michigan heading in our direction. I was also plagued from an overheating vehicle. The result is that I had half the day off and decided to go test out my V3 upgrade again. When i got to the field the wind had to be blowing to 15 to 20 and gusting to 30 easily. Against my better judgment I strapped in a battery and took her up. I won't brag about the V2/V3's flight performance because it got really blown around, but in 6 packs I worked this heli hard. 3D, hurricanes, flips rolls, extremely high loops and nose dives with quick pitch changes. I guess I wanted to see the torque tube blow out. I tried a series of level full speed inverted descents at full power and pitch then went to full reverse pitch. Nothing! Rock solid! The tail didn't even blow out. Keep in mind this is at 4S running 100 90 100 throttle curve with a Scorpoin Hk2221-8 3500kv motor. Cool! I have to tach this thing.

The funny part is that I used to be really disgusted with this 450 V2. Now, with the upgrades, I am loving it. I'm now going to buy more packs for it and find myself wanting punish it a little more.
I think the upgrades were worth every penny. I don't find myself wanting a 450 Pro. Considered buying head, frame and needed parts to upgrade my V2/V3 upgrade to a full Pro version. I think it would be better to keep it just the way it is.

So to switch my aging SEV2 head to the Align Metal Main Rotor Housing Set HS1296A for the Trex450 Sport, is this a 1:1 tradeout or do I need to purchase other parts?
If there is a thread on this mod, please do post it !

Also, Is there a thread for the torque tube mod?

It will swap right in. It comes with a new spindle and hardware. YOu won't be able to use the se v2 spindles if you have them in your parts box. You will need to buy the 450 Pro spindles for this new hub. You reuse your blade grips. I also bought the Se v2 Trueblood green dampeners fot this upgrade and didn't use the stock ones. Just $26 or so is all you need. I did upgrade to the torque tube to see how that holds up and I think I am going to install the original belt set up again just to see how it flies with the new hub. My buddy installed the Sport hub your looking at on his V2 and after a few days is very excited about it. He still runs the belt and hasn't upgraded to the Torque tube yet.
I can fly 3d pretty well but had a problem flying this 450 v2. This makes it much more stable. I'f I were you and wanted to fly the 450 some more I'd atleast upgrade to the sport hub. I am going out to fly her again tonight after work. Can't wait.

FYI: Trex 450 V2 V3 upgrade hub "snag"

If you loose your aluminum collars on your spindle your outta luck!
I just lost a blade grip in flight on my V3 upgrade 450 today. Both Blades landed 50 feet opposite from one another. One of the grips/blades had the spindle still attached to the grip. I lost the dampeners and the aluminum collars which compress the dampeners.
I automatically took collars from the V2 parts box and installed them when repairing the heli. The grips were too tight and the bearins were notchy. After a complete tear down and reassembly I had the same problem. Researching this on the heli sites I find the collars for the Pro, Sport and the V3 upgrade are 1mm thick. The collars in the V2 are 1.5mm thick. The problem is I can't find where to order the 1mm collars without buying a whole new hub for $26.

Here is the V2 Spindle and collars indicating 1.5mm

On readyheli.com Both HS1296 and HS1296A indicate 1mm thick collars
- Metal main rotor housing x1
- Aluminum collar x2 (Φ4xΦ5.6x1mm)

Arrgh! This always seems to be my problem with helis. Gotta by $30 worth of crap so I can get a $2 part. I've been looking and cannot locate those collars for sale by themselves either.

even not doing anything would have been better than nothing...

Yea, I can't figure why they don't sell them with the feathering shaft. I think it is probably an oversight on Aligns behalf. Once the 450 owners get word of how well this upgrade is there will be so many more head hubs sold and more complaints will come in. I bet they will make the change and sell this part with the feathering shaft.

My stupidity! No lock tite! I was to excited to get it flying. I usually preflite check and did not. Funny thing is it was in the first 20 seconds of my first of six packs I wanted to fly. No damage. Boom slightly bent and no gears broken. Small crack in the canopy. I disassembled the full head and cleaned it with solvent and now have everythig back together with lock tite.

I did file them down, well actually rubbed them down on 150 grit sand paper to 1mm.

What was your final measurement on your spacers.

You made me think, I guess we could kinda custom fit our own collars for a tighter head??? Ya think?

not sure bud what the measurement was, i used stock V2 spacers and have a perfect fit. I am using copterx grips but they should be identical. the copterx spacers were to large and the sport spacers to small. trying to measure while the spacers are still on the head they look to be 1mm

yes you could custom fit the spacers if needed. My head is as tight as I need or anyone would need with stock parts.

very interesting.
With the 1mm collars the fit seemed perfect. Once I lost the spacers and used the V2/1.5mm spacers I found after tightening the spindle bolts that the grips are way, way, way to tight with very notchy bearings. I am using Trueblood green dampeners. Perhaps my dampeners make the difference.

Just thinking that it would be easy enough to sand down the 1.5mm collars to 1mm or 1.1 or 1.2mm if necessary. Rubbing the collars on 150 grip sand paper allowed me to remove .3mm at a time. Very easy to control material removal. I'll stick with 1mm for now and experiment later if I want to tighten things up later.

New 12T on my 4s setup.

Must have 35 flights on the V2/V3 upgrade now and a couple crashes. I did want a little more power so today I just upgraded the 10T pinion for a 12T. Took her up for an initial flight and WOW! That thing rips. Collective is insane. I dialed down my swash pitch to a comfortable amount. This left me exactly where I wanted to be. No bogging at all. When tached I came up with 3210 head speed. Seem to have much more negative than positive so I'll have to get that sorted out. Getting her dialed in.

This is an interesting thread to give new life to my V2. Did you or have you considered upgrading the V2 swash? My V2 swash is sloppy. It still works for now but are the Pro and Sport swashes tighter? I am assuming that those probably are not interchangeable with the V2.

Thanks

Its funny you should ask. I just had a friend tell me about the Quick UK swash for our 600's. He said it is a must have upgrade. That made me think about the 450. My 450 swash is surly sloppy. Not sure if any are direct replacements. I bet the sport swash would drop right in. Maybe I'll take the chance and buy one.
