hey guys,
I am seriously considering getting a Swift 550 cabon. I have a trex 450 pro and a raptor 50, both of which I like. The Raptor is my first nitro and I'm not sure if I like nitro power that much. Too much fumbling around, with ignitors, fuel, pumps, starters, glow plugs. and there always seems to be something wrong, whether it's with the engine, clutch, bearings, fuel system, ect. Plus I'm not all that impressed with the power to weight ratio anyway.

The 450 is great, but it's too small. It's more of a walk up to the park after school thing, not a fly all day on the weekend thing, ya know?

The point being, I want a larger electric. I briefly considered the 500 class (425mm blades) but it seems like that would have a similar effect than the 450....usually it's too windy, ect. ect.

So I arrived at the 550, or .30 class...big, but not 600 sized. Still does well on 6s power.

My skill level is just entering 3D. I still barely flip it at all, but I am getting there. The Swift seems like a heli that I could grow with. I will still keep all the helis I have now but this would give me....another heli...? You can never have too many right

Anyway, what do you guys think about this? I have been hanging around RC groups but those threads "tales of everyone's swift" are too hard to navigate (and rather pointless), so I thought I would ask here.

What say you?

There are quite a few good choices for a 6s 3D helicopter.

The T-rex 500 is designed for smaller 6s batteries (2250 to 3000 MAH) and is a very good 3D helicopter. It handles will in the wind and is very economical. It’s size is half way between a 450 and 550 but flies more like a larger helicopter.

The Swift 550 is nice if you want a 550 size helicopter.

The Raptor E550 is also a nice helicopter but is a little heavier than the swift but is a little more durable.

The largest 6s 3D helicopter is the T-rex 600. This is the most popular helicopter using a 6s LiPo and everyone has kits, parts, and upgrades.

I have tried most all of them and it is really a matter of what size of a helicopter you want to fly. Now that hobbycity.com is making quality LiPo batteries at a reasonable price almost everyone can afford to fly larger helicopters. I have been flying them exclusively this year and they are just as good as (sometimes better) than the expensive brands.

thanks for the reply. +1 on Hobby City, they are the only reason I can afford an electric this big. Paying $60 for a 6s 4000mah pack beats the hell out of $200.

I don't really want a 500. I thought about it, and for the price of one of those I could have a Swift 550.

I thought about the trex 600 E, but I heard that 6s doesn't really cut it. I know people are going to say that's not true but several guys at our club tried 6s and immediately switched to 8, 10, or 12s setups. For me, absolutely not. 6s is my max for now.

I have literally hundreds of flights on my various Swifts. I find that for all out performance on 6S packs, in these larger helis (I find the T500 that uses 425mm blades a little too small for me, not all that much different then the T450SE), the Swift is much snappier then the T600 on the same 6S packs.

I found the T600's really needed 8S packs to fly like my Swift 550SE does on the 6S/3700 or 6S4500 packs. On the 6S packs, it flies more like a 50 nitro with an OS46 rather then with the OS50 Hyper. On the other hand, the Swift 550SE with the same packs flew more like a the 50 nitro with the OS50 hyper, maybe with even better pop.

I even found the inexpensive Swift 16 flew better on these same packs 6S/4500 packs then did the T600.

All probably due to their better power to weight ratio.

Swift 550 carbon
Scorpion 4025 1100 kv
Castle Creations 75amp ICE
3x Hitec hs-2625 mg
Zippy flightmax 6s 4000mah
And most likely throw in some carbons.

So around $1000.

Thoughts?

If you want to stay with the Castle, then I would go with the 100 since it is not much more and it will give you room to grow

i don't know much about those servos, and check out the Gohbee 550mm carbons and KBDD tails. Not much money at all and work extremely well.......Ron

I will probably end up getting the Align ds610. Under $200 for all 3 I think that's a pretty good deal.

I'm not too impressed with the bearings in the Scorpions...

If you oil the bearings every 15-20 flights or so (as suggested) you will have no issues at all. unless you are getting it CHEAP you might as well buy new

You may well want to consider the combo with the Century 600+ motor and their 80A ESC.

It is the only such motor/esc that Century sell with their heli. That is probably because they have been tested (flown hard for a long time in the R&D program, before they even hit the shelves) by a number of their team pilots, and any modifications required to make them long lasting and top performers have been done to them.

A number of us locally use that combo and have literally flown them for many years and find they perform well with no issues.

My motor and ESC, turning 560mm blades at a 2100 rotor speed, run relatively cool as they only reach 108 to 110 degrees after a hard flight.

oldfart, thats exactly what I was planning to do. But you see....

Swift 550 kit = $310

Kit, motor, esc combo = $510

Which means...they're charging $200 for their motor and esc.

So I get the kit and...

Castle Creations 75 ICE....$100

Scorpion 4025 1100kv...$115

Don't need a BEC, the ICE has a 5a swiching BEC.

Equals $525.

So for $15 more I'm getting a cooler running, more powerful motor and a fully USB programmable heli ESC with a governor.

Hmmm....I would need proof, as my 600+/80A ESC has always ran really cool even after well over 200 very hard flights.

Looking at the Scorpion, I cannot see a cooling fan built in? Does it have one??

My Eagle Tree readings show that during some maneuvers I pulled maxes of 109 amps with peak wattages of 2200 and on most flights, average wattages varied from 700 to 1050!...and still using the original bearings with no maintenance.

As for programming the ESC. It seems like Century has already done all the programing required for use with their Swift and the 600+ motor combination, as they work so well together, so I guess I will remain happy using them.

I guess I am spoiled, as on of my pet peeves, is having to plug things in and then finding I have to spend time learning a whole new set of things, just to program something to work as I wish. So if I can buy something that is more "plug & play", and already proven to work as advertised for what I want to do, the happier I am.

The Swift 620SE is bigger. I ordered it and should be getting the first flight next week. However, my plan is to downsize to 550 blades/boom after first crash, but I got the 620SE because it has all upgrades.

Yes, the Swift 620SE is a great flier on 6S packs (just check out the videos of Al Austria flying his.)

And it is a far more robust design for 8S or 10S use then is the T600E.

Why bother flying a helicopter if it's not Align?

I swear.... I went to the field last weekend and there were 6 identical trex 500's, 3 600's and 3 700's. Identical setups for the most part. Now where the hell is the fun in that?
