Novarossi 57 tuning comparison

I am looking for comments from people that own a Rex 57 and have owned other 50s and how they compared in respect to ease of tuning. In the year and a half I have been flying now I have owned a couple OS hyper 50s and a thunder tiger 53. I have never been great at tuning but I have probably had the most success with the hyper 50. How difficult was it to follow the instructions and set up and tune your Rex 57 compared to other motors you have owned. My heli is in need of a new motor and I am intrigued by what I am hearing about the Rex 57, however after some tuning difficulties I have had with the TT53 I am not sure if I would be better off to wait until the Hyper 55 comes out. Also has there been a fuel type and % that has worked well with the motor as it comes from the factory? I have enough issues trying to get tuning right without having to worry if maybe the problem is shim related. Please try and keep on topic as I am not interested in turning this into an OS vs Novarossi thread or anything of that nature. Thanks

well let me tell you (not that I have ever owned the 53 or 57), but if you do a couple searches you will find guys are happily taking time to mount the OS carb on their 53s and 57s,,

and many of them find they get a increase in power with the OS carb

Actually it's quite easy. The BIGGEST thing to watch out for, or should I say, get set up right is the throttle barrel. It's quite different from OS and YS. Luca has remarked on this serveral times.

You need to set the barrel up so that at idle the barrel mark is halfway between the low mark on the carb body and the 1st of the 3 marks in the middle of the carb body. Set your low speed needle from there.

I initially set mine up this way for break in, but brain farted and deviated when I started to tune it after break in. My motor then ran lean in a hover.

Other than that, it's simple. The needles work great. They aren't touchy. You can turn them 1/8 turn at a time and see the difference, but not too much of a difference that you'll harm the motor.

Very easy to tune follow the instructions which are good. The carb works great. Compression it the only other issue with tuning. But most here can help with that too.

Thanks for the response so far. Huskynox I am not 100% sure what you are meaning. Are you talking about the amount of opening of the carb at your idle setting in the radio or is this lining up the carb in some way to the motor? I'm sure it would make more sense if I was looking at it. Has anyone had any luck with a type and or % of nitro fuel with the stock setup of the motor?

I spent A LOT of time trying to get the stock carb to work correctly this past weekend at a big funfly in SC. There were several "pro" pilots there helping me out as well.

I know some people have had great success with the stock carb, but as soon as I swapped it for the OS carb, it was like a whole new engine all together. I never did like the old "super tigre" carb design anyway, which is pretty much what the novarassi carb is. The OS carb is a drop in fit.

Just my 2c.

I have had the O.S 50,O.S 50 Hyper,Redline 53 and the Novarossi 57.

If you follow Luca's suggestions for run in and set the compression ratio to the right amount for the amount of nitro you use you will find it a breeze to tune. You will also find Luca is very proactive in resolving any issues and giving help through the forum.

I don't understand why you might want to put a O.S carb on it as the two Novarossi's I have tuned have been easy and give loads of power and torque on the standard carb.

The quoted power output is higher on the Novarossi than the O.S 55HZ
