Hirobo SDX EP Conversion

Well, I finally took the time to get some pic's of my latest conversion....
I had initially done it with a 6s set up, but was not real happy with the first 3 minute burst at about 1950 rpm and then it would settle into about a 1850 for the balance of the 5 minute flight time....
Now on 8s, I am pulling a constant 2090 hs for 6 minutes and only taking about 3300mah out of the 5000mah packs... so it is "happy"!!! And so am I.......

Congrats on the conversion. I was thinking about building a second SDX (EP) over the winter. Looks great!

How are you liking the RFI packs?

How is the balance with the packs in that configuration, nose-heavy?

Again, it looks great, any video of it in flight?

Thanks !

More Info!!!!!

The all up is 9.5 pounds....... a little heavier with the 2 packs, but I promise, it is not minding hauling them around at 2090 hs....!!!! What is the weight on a wet unit ready to go????

The new RFI packs from MRC are working GREAT... I am pulling 35 amps +/- constant with a burst of 75amps, when I really lay on the collective, and they are barely getting warm, and staying in balance without a problem... the 6s set up was beating up the batteries pretty good, and I had to play with the balance a few times on them.... not on these... I am liking them....
As far as the CG goes, it hangs about 1/2-3/4" nose down which works fine for me without any problems.... I am sure I could level it with a metal tail box!!! But not going to... it is flying great the way it sits....
Sorry, no video of it in flight yet.... I need to find two things... someone with a camera and also a pilot that can really let it "rip", and that is NOT ME!!!! But I am having a lot of fun with this machine... they are starting to call me a "closet" 3D flier now!!!! (spelled, Watch This!!!!)This is not "Grand Dad's" 50!!!!!

Thank you, Stan

Yeah, you don't compare apples to apples when you take a glow model without fuel and compare it to an E model ready to roll. It is for this reason that FAI rules now require wet models to be weighed WITH fuel.

Stan,

Are you running the Hacker B50XL 20-23?

Also, which pinion did you determine works best for the 8S setup?

thx,

A ROCKET

For you guys wanting a video. I don't think it would do it justice. Besides I don't think anyone could keep up with the heli with a cam. You have to see this thing in person.

Info.....

Thanks Jeff, but I am sure there is someone that could capture this with the "right" pilot on it!!!!! But it sure will cover some real estate!!!

I have been trying to get a good mesh on the 89t main with an 8t pinion, but since there is no adjustment in the clutch stack bearing, I have had no luck and 2 burnt main gears.... so right now I am using the stock 87t main and the 8t pinion from the 50 sized Vertol conversion that I did...the problem being that I need to keep the HV85 at between 60 to 65% to keep a hs that is isn't "SCAREY"!!!!
With this set up I can pull 2090 hs for 7.5 minutes and it is consistant throughout the flight....but I am more comfortable at 1900... but I am NOT a 3D flier, although since I began flying this set up I am hearing the guys call me a closet 3D pilot....
Next problem is that I am using a MEDUSA motor (now out of business), so I have contacted two companies with the spec's needed and I am waiting to see what they come up with, hopefully very soon!!!
But with 2-4s, 5000mah batteries, this heli is just ALL OUT FUN, and once I get a final motor supplier, I will pass the info on.. and I am sure that you will not be sorry with the way it GOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Stan

Running GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, I had to pull the trigger, just to try one out..... I ordered a NEU motor Friday afternoon..... it has the same spec as the one I am running, but I am wondering if it will be the same or better then the MEDUSA.... but since MEDUSA went out of business, I want to know that I have a source for a motor for this set up..... soooooo, it is on its way.... they are special order, but there is no big rush since the weather is about to set in on us for the winter.... should be an interesting side by side comparison.... and I have a lot of people that have asked about this conversion... One of the easiest I have ever done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stan

Hi any news on the Neu motor compared to the MED? Also is there a way to fit the 8s packs flat right under the motor instead of the upper nose area?

New Info???? Not Yet

Hello Huggy,

I have not been able to do any comparisons as of yet since winter set in prior to me getting the NEU motor..... but I will be installing it early in the season so that I can do some tests.... I plan on flying with the MEDUSA first and may put my E-logger on board, and then do the conversion (about 30 minutes) to the Neu and run it the same way....
As far as my battery location, as it is the CG still comes within a tolerable range... if the batteries were both under I am sure you would have a tail heavy problem....
Thanks and I will post again as I get back to "outside" flying.... Stan

Glad ya got a lull w/450 run a bouts. Too bad about Medusa, I understand they were the real thing. Vidio, will need pros w/multipal cameras, a score and a flight plan! No 3D in me.

What are the specs of the motor you are using on your sdx?

Spec's

Take a look at the Neu motors 1415/2Y
The size, kv, and most other info looks about the same as the Medusa that I have in it now.... but will be making a switch soon....
I was really hoping that they would wind me a 850 KV motor, but that was not available as of yet... this is 1100kv and can really get those blades turning nicely if you are not carefull on your throttle curve!!!!

Kit ......

Hirobo does have a motor mount kit that you can use to do the conversion.... it is what I have used, and is working quite well... but you are limited to using a 36mm can motor, and there are not a lot to choose from....
I plan on installing the neu motor soon, so that it will be ready when the weather here begins to get a bit better....
