I'd like suggestions for what type and brand of paint I should use in an airbrush to paint fiberglass canopies. Is a lacquer preferred due to it's quick drying time? I'll be clearcoating with automotive clear.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		You can use urethanes, enamels or lacquers! I prefer lacquers and urethanes. But with urethanes, they are faster. Once you get use to using them.

You can not use automotive lacquers on lexan! It to harsh. You have to use Pacta Racing Finish or Parma Faskolor.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I first got into painting, doing r/c car bodies. The biggest thing is to learn how to get to paint to stick. Doing cars is fun but you get a rep if the doesn't stick. I've done so many car bodies I lost count a couple of years ago. But you can take any of my car bodies and slam them into the wall an the paint stays. My heli canopies are the same way. I got one here a customer sent me to copy. I took some pictures that I'm going to put on my web site, to show that after a crash the still stuck there.
What's fun is to paint a r/c car bodies so that the paint job can cast it's own shadow.

Have you ever tried to use Createx Auto Air? It is a water based acrylic enamel alot like faskolor. I have used both and no matter what they come out grainy. I am not using it on the inside of lexan bodies so I am trying to figure out how to get it to flow out smooth. Sanding it don't work worth a crap either! The crap never really dries it remains soft! Any ideas would be apreciated.

Have you ever tried to heat setting the paint? I use Pactra Racing Finish Lacquers on lexan. And for Faskolor I have a canopy that's made from a plastic called PVC. It's a Milli carbon fiber look alike canopy. That the customer what's a pink drip put on it.
I've used Createx water base colors for tee shirts. But didn't like it. Now I use Aqua Flow for tee's. And Createx Auto Air, never used. Now with all these different paints I now have 50 airbrushes. 25 for water base for tee's, and the other 25 for lacquers and urethanes.

No I haven't but I think I will give it a try. I was also reading just now that you can put a couple drops of isopropyl alcohol in it to make it spray and flow better. Who really knows I will have to experiment. Does anyone know where to get House of Kolor paints in smaller quantities than quarts?

I read that at www.howtoairbrush.com under goalie mask or helmet. It doesn't say anything about faskolor but they are pretty much the same is far as I can tell. I think the Auto Air colors are a hell of a lot better though but that is my opinion.

How does it hold up on the truck body? Does scratch off easy?

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		It scratches if but if you back it with a light coat of pactra spray it hold up really well. On the metal flakes you need back color any way and some faspearls you also do like the faspearl white I back with blue and it looks awsome with blue running boards and bumpers. Metal flakes I back with the silver or gold.. And The bottles cost like $3.50 and you can do two cars with most colors and some colors take more. And on the hili canopys it gets 2 or 3 cooats of clear so that holds up also.

Here where I live it's $4.29 a bottle. I thought it was stronger. From reading, it should not scratch. Do you heat set the paint?

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Mort I do set the bodies in front of the furnace vent and that air is about 120 -130 degrees when it starts. And my scratch test is my fingernail against the paint and scratching[not really hard but moderate pressure]

I really thinned my Auto Air paint with water and a couple drops of alcohol. It flows alot better! I also heat set it and that seemed to smooth it out even more. I know you guys are talking about painting from the inside so it doesn't matter as much for you guys. Also I wanted to tell you that for the Auto Air you can add Bond All and Cayalyst. The Bond All is made to help it stick better and the Catalyst makes it harder!
It still never get's hard as rock so it is still flexible. Also the Aito Air comes in 4oz bottles and the price is $5.00-$6.50 depending on the color. I think thet the Auto Air has better colors and is more cost effective.
