So I was flying the heck out of my highly modified N9.5 when the unbelievable happened but I'll build up to it.
So I'm flying around doing some hard flips, tic-tocs, piro flips, semi funnels, ect... and she's got more power than I could've ever imagined. I'm on my 5 or 6th flight for the morning and the outside temp is absolutely perfect at ~ 75 deg with winds < 5mph. I've leaned the high needle 1 or 2 clicks as well as increasing the TJ rev limiter from 83 to 85% (using TJ as a gov). She's running so strong and I'm able to do full collective tic-tocs (forward and side) for unlimited time frames and I've got her about 50-75 ft up (I'm not confident enough to do them on the deck yet). I'm flying her really fast in reverse with a sudden cyclic change to a reverse flip and going to a punch out when suddenly there was a powerful "POOF" and I watch in horror as the two main blades fly away in opposite directions at 100+ mph. Out of pure habbit, I hit TH and even found myself trying to auto a blade-less heli in. The heli then goes from vertical to horizontal to nose-dn vertical. She then free falls the 50-75ft STRAIGHT down to mother earth. Of course the throttle didn't go to the fail safe 0 and so my buddy ran over to the heli to shut down the screaming OS 91-SZ-p.
Damage report. The electric fan battery was burried about 6" in the earth and whenever I tried to pull it out by the wires, she started smoking. The blades are UNSCRATCHED. The frame appears to be solid, the landing gear solid. The boom slightly bent and not sure about the Hyper TT. The main gear and crown gears toast. Main shaft, flybar, and presumably the spindle all bent. All electronics look good except the Froemco reg.

Cause. It's rather easy to see that the stock grips simply both broke at the same time from the amount of power this bird had. If it had been one, then I'd say it was simply the fact that they were plastic; but since BOTH broke at the same time, it has to be a combination of power being greater than designed load. There was NOT a SINGLE link broke (even the ones on the grips are still connected).

After thought. Thank God I wasn't practicing on the deck! It was really funny when I realized I was trying to auto her out of habbit. I'm amazed that the frame appears to be in one piece. The clutch got so hot that once she was lying on the ground, it made a 2nd little explosion.

That is crazy! I would have loved to seen that on video. After you get it flying again post a video of all the great power.

Sorry for the downed heli.

Actually, the sad part is I've got TWO set's of hypergrips that I kept saying I was going to put one on this bird and the 2nd on the other bird. Just kept putting it off as this was the "experimental" bird LOL.

I sure wish I had it on vid cause it was very spectacular. I've seen a head blow on a heli, but usually either from some type of other mechanical failure on the ground, but never something like this (Well, there was my buddies heli in which the bolt that goes thru the block, broke and the top half of the head went up and the heli fell like a brick).

Of course I've started the mental planning on the replacement N9.6 of which she'll have 8717HV's, electric cooling, electric tail, AUW <10 lbs, ect.....

I saw it first hand. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen! One sec I'm hooking up batteries to charge then I hear POOF! and see a heli free falling from about 75+ feet. Bad day man.

I saw the same thing at the Phoenix fun fly in 2007. There is a warning and an engineering update on the synergy web site. Sorry about the loss, but I am happy nobody got hurt.

Dude that is a cool mod. (removal of fan and shroud) Do you notice a huge increase of power with the lack of parasitic drag? I imagine it would make a huge difference. Tell us more about it other than the fact that it throws blades

I only crash due to random planetary intervention

There was a definate increase in power but unfortunately I can't but a figure on it (like change in watts on an electric). In addition to the other advantages that's been discussed in our other thread (making an N9 lighter), I also noticed that my flight times were up to over 8 minutes and i still had plenty fuel left (at least another minute). Now I'm nowhere near a "good" 3D pilot and so allthough my pitch management is something I'm working deligently on, it's not great. The point being, I waste more fuel attempting 3D magic than the average pilot and I've still been increasing my flight timer.

Sad one

That's really bad. It happened to me once a long time ago on a Kyosho, but only one blade broke off and flew away. Fortunately, both of yours broke off at the same time, and that caused less damage than only one broke.

So what is so highly modified about this N9 and where is the extreme power out of a OS SZ. It doesn't look any different than one that i have on the shelf besides being uncrashed.

missle,

Did you replace the fan and shroud with the electric fan, baffles, and a Hyperhub? I can imagine the reduction of drag on the engine without the fan on the crankshaft.
