Hi !

I'm very sad today. My beam just blew up in midair. The main shaft is bent, my esc dead and a few other things broken...

I don't know what happened. I was flying in idle-up (100 flat) with 2221-6 motor... That was only my fifth flight with my brand new beam :-(

From what I have recovered, I think the top bearing (just under the swashplate) failed.. I'm a beginner (8 months of flight with axe 400 RTF).
When I built it, I had minor problems with the main shaft, and maybe I was a little bit "hard" with the top bearing on the main shaft, causing it to wear prematurely.

This bearing comes pre-installed (loctited) out of the box. Maybe I should have checked if it was correctly loctited ???

What do you think ?

Thank you very much for your information !

PS I hope you understand my english from Switzerland ;-)

only mid air i ve seen to self destruct have been spindle screw related or a worn dampening and a boom strike 8months in and 100% flat curve ? for what are u 3ding it ? and on its 5th flight i wouldnt be myself. that just when you know it will hold togather and sport flying and simple circuits, IMHO. no need for 100% yet ?

11 tooth...

the thing is... the beam is very quiet compared to my axe 400 3d RTF.

So you don't have the sensation of the headspeed.. Even with idle-up (100-95-90-95-100) I had 7+ minutes of flight time !
With the -6 I expected only 4-5 minutes...with 2200 mah batteries.
The ESC (70 amp commander scorpion) was very hot after a flight, my batteries were quite hot (I'd say the same temperature as with my axe 400 RTF after 7 minutes too of flying time...)

That was the first time I had to set the gear mesh between motor pinion and main gear (maybe too tight ???)

I've finally purchased another one and I'll be very careful with the top block bearing, because I think it's probably the culprit in my midair "crash"...

Thank you very much for your information all :-)

mid air crash

ive had my main shaft just bend with that high of headspeed, make sure you get the hardened main shaftr if your using -6 with 11 or 12 tooth pinion, its spinning real fast with those combos

Thank you for your answer !

I've just rebuilt my beam but I didn't know there was a hardened shaft available... Where do you find it ?

I thought this heli had no upgrade parts... One more time bad advertisement :-(

I've just flown my rebuilt heli and now the motor cut out for a split second and then immediately restart in flight... I've changed the motor timing to 15... I think I'll go back to auto timing... What do you think ?

Thank you very much for answering me

Thank you I've found them !

Well hidden by the way... Advantage hobby are the only sellers it seems..

This is strange... They could provide these hardened shafts in the kit !! That would avoid destroying the heli at the first flights without knowing why.. For 9.99 dollars instead of 7.99

Or AT LEAST make a short notice in the manual that with 2221-6 these shafts are mandatory

So for now I'll stay with the standard shaft because I don't want to disassemble the whole rotor... With 80% at mid-stick no problem it seems..

Best regards !

PS : I've reset the motor timing to AUTO and no more problems...
Do someone here tried another value (except 15 degrees..) ?

LOL !! It's not so exotic as you think ;-)

I've been in the United States for my vacation two or three times and that's not so different... Of course Switzerland is a small country compared to USA. Be we have high standards of living and the mountains are so pretty ;-). And we have big banks with lot of money (your money maybe LOL)

And there is even Beam 450 helis here (in fact I don't know how many people fly beam 450 in Switzerland but I must be the only one LOL !!!!)

To return the the main subject, had anyone flown the 2221-6 with high motor timing (such as 25-30 degress) ??

Alexandre from Switzerland ;-)
