e-Electric Motors & Controllers > Jive 120 Motor Cut Off.... Having problems

Two electric engine outs in one day.

The first one was caused from the motor cables being cut into from rubbing on the frames and they shorted out. I sanded frames, reinforced wires, and was good to go.

I flew one flight and everything was going great.

On the second flight after the repair I had flown for about 3 minutes and the motor cut out. I managed to save the heli. The LED on the jive120 was blinking 8 times wich means that "Over current detected by hardware, immediate shut off, no restart possible."

I fly extremely hard 3d szabo style. And literally beat the crap out of the heli. That is why I went with the 120. I figured it would be over-kill and I wouldn't have to worry about this kind of thing happening.

My setup is:

T-rex 700e 12cell (two six cell)
Helidirect conversion
scorpion 500kv (OLD STYLE)
2090 head speed
710SB's
Turnigy 5000mah six cells (4.5 min flight times)
Jive 120
85% flat throttle curve
14 degrees positive/negative

Last but not least when I finish my flights, engine outs encluded, the speed controller is not hot AT ALL. Ambient temp. However the scorpion 500 motor is hot as hell. Consitantly 170 degrees.

Thanks for any advice on the problem.

either the motor got a hit in the first short.
OR the connectors got a hit, slightest, I mean slightest issue with the motor connectors and you get shutdown inflight with 8 blinks.

Scorpions run pretty hot, but thats normal for them, but if its sizzling hot, that might be an indicator of it got a hit when you got the first short.

That head speed isn't high at all...if anything Id say it sounds a bit tame in the HS department though the power is there to play

Does your ESC flash an error code after the flight... Do not turn it off, look at what the ESC says when you pick the heli up if it shuts down again. From there take action to correct the problem.

BTW your running a slightly bigger disk than Ive seen typically used on this heli and your weight is definitally up there with the 5ah packs. I wouldnt be surprised if your average current draw is over 60A(and peaks over the current rating of your ESC)...I only say that because my 700E pulls 60A average.

BTW at the end of the pack your ESC must draw more current to maintain the RPM. Also keep in mind your motor is hotter so the resistance is higher. The big picture is your ESC must draw more current to keep the head speed you want and I bet at that point it gets angry and shuts down. I think Kontronik is too conservative on their setting but if any crash happens at least the esc didnt break and they arent liable to fix your heli

Hey Al

I think the problem might be the motor and not the speedy. With the weight, headspeed and blades on your heli you will be putting some serious load on the motor and if the motor can't physically provide the torque required and stalls out on hard manoeuvrers then there can be very high current spikes. The fact the motor is getting so hot pionts towards that. I've seen the joker guys beating pretty hard on their helis with 710's and 12s 5000mAh, but thier normally running actro and plettenberg motors.

Also I had exactly the same problem with a jive 100 LV going out on overcurrent and ended up being a seized bearing in the motor. I know scorpion bearing aren’t the best and you said it was a older motor so might be worth checking.

Anything found or resolved as of yet by original poster?

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...
