So far I love this tiny bird but it did have a couple of annoying oddities.

The first thing I did was to heat up the tail boom just a tad and reposition the tail mtr so it was perpendicular to the main mast.

This helped rid alot of the wobbles when doing fast pirros.

The second thing I have done was to use neg expo everywhere including the tail.
I'm using a X9303.
The responce was much improved.

What has anyone else done.

Regards.

Rick... tell me more about turning the tail motor perpendicular.

That is the first I read of someone doing that. Any other benefit besides ridding the wobbles in fast piros... or is that about it?

I have put a 1/8 inch wide piece of heat shrink over the end of the tail rotor motor. It hasn't been talked about much here on RR... but a hard crash on the tail... and the black plastic end cap has been falling out. It is a bit*h to get it back in I hear... because the brushes in it are so small and hard to line up on the armature again.

Just put it on mine from the get go... as it is just a matter of time and it will get knocked out.

The LHS already had it happen to theirs... and it seems to be the biggest problem everyone is having out there with the mSR.

Going to try the negative expo on the tail also... get the rudder closer to center stick.

I only did it to help with the wobbles, aside from that it flies great.

I wish someone would come out with some diff color canopies though.

Another thing to do is the linkage from the swash plate you can move them to the other 2 balls. They are longer and by using them you get more control movement. Chuck

I changed to the "long" ball links on the swash, put 3 drops of CA on the tail motor housing, put a small piece of black electrical tape on one fly paddle for wobble free spool-up and made four turns down on the elevator servo ball link for better forward flight. I've also learned that on my Spektrum dx6i, you can flip the "Gear" switch to "1" for more servo throw and better performance. Currently checking with MIA Micro-Filght on their mcx canopies and scale fuselages to see if they'll fit.
Absolutely love this little bird!

Does anyone know if it's possible to fly 3d with the msr?

No can do with the 3D. With a fixed pitch the best you might get out of it would be a loop or roll with plenty of altitude to spare.

Instead of putting the heatshrink on the back, were I've read comes off too, I put a piece of plastic tubing between the tail rotor and the motor can. If it gets wacked on the end of the shaft now it goes agains the can instead of pushng out the back end. Don't really want to test it.

I put two dabs of CA glue on mine which should keep it from coming off in a crash.

First modification: I put a rubber, which is soft, taken from Trex 450 landing skid:

What is your opinion?

Very clever.......

But that rubber skid stop probably is heavier than the stock motor its protecting... I wish I had thought of it...

Cut down swash plate control arms for extra quicker cylic mod.

Maybe try this mod to shorten the swash plate servo control arms:

I tried EatAtJoes mod (RC-G)
YouTube - E Flite Blade MSR Swashplate Mod How To By EatAtJoes

...only I used a nail clipper to cut the control arms off at the swash body then clipped off 3.5mm (just over a 1/4) from each arm an CA glued the arms to the swash body, maintaining the same flush geometry. The swash control arm balls are ~12mm before the mod and 8 to 9mm from swash body after. Quite an easy mod with a steel ruler and nail clipper , CA holds adequately but be very careful not to contaminate the swash bearing. Zero any trim offsets by changing the servo links by turning the threaded server link heads, to equal out max response deflections in all directions and avoids any binding of the swashplate down on to the shaft collar screw grip.

Gives a little extra quicker cyclic, which looses a little more altitude as you thrash the stick . Should be better for outdoor FFF and hanging into the breeze, where I feel more cyclic would be very useful.

If the cyclic become to twitchy for precision hovering then I'll dial a smidge of expo in or resort to the ch5 DX7 gear switch that activates the internal dual rates on the MSR board.

E-Flite blade MSR FP calculator guide estimates.

I have installed the performance kit from Cusker RC, it definitely make the heli much more responsive. I also run longer blades beefed up with carbon fiber to smooth the transition from forward to fast forward flight.

Fast Forward Flight report for the shorter Swash plate control arms mod for extra quicker cyclic.

Was a calm evening tonight (constant velocity mild breeze ~3mph) and gave the MSR plenty of FFF. With the extra cyclic response the handling is noticeably better, more comfortable to fly and left handed circuits are a lot better, though still not the same as easy/natural as right handed circuits. Plenty of left cyclic to spare and more confident.
Indoors I use 20% expo to soften the cyclic centre for better precision maneuvers and landings, outdoors is better suited to a flat curve response on full rates for predictable handling.

Yes the MSR still exhibits the quirks of a ultra micro FP rotor system but for more experienced flyers seeking more cyclic then the shorter swash control arms mod is pretty simple and effective mod to start with .

Take off the canopy and grab the swash link. Push and pull up and down on it and look for slop in the servos. You will see the servo gear move up and down. On top of the servo where the screw shaft exits you'll see a little black collar. If you do have up and down slop, you can push that collar down some with a very small screwdriver to remove the slop. Be careful it's delicate. Hold the lower gear with your finger while pushing down on the collar up top. I also found I had one servo that was loose. Two very small Phillips screws needed to be tightened.

I also found my swash was coming apart after repeated crashes. The very inner sleeve was coming out of the center of the bearing. Guess I'll glue it.

hootowl,

Thanks for the info and pointers. My swash was coming apart too, guess I'd better check for slop in my servos. All in all a great little heli though!
