To get the tail pitch as mechanically perfect as possible — which on the Beam is roughly 8 degrees — my theory is to circumvent the gyro and plug the tail servo directly into the RX, get the heli into a no-drift hover, which I realize will take some trial and error, then plug the gyro back in. Anyone tried this? Did it work?

never tried on a beam, I tried a couple of years ago to fly my helicopter without gyro because it was BO and I was not patient enough...

Ended nearly crashing it and then decided to wait

Keep us updated, I realise you only want to hover... not fly

It will work after a lot of adjustments if you're only hovering. If you want to do anything else its really hard. Basically set the pitch so that it will not drift(or close to it) during a hover, and then bring down the ATV's by a lot, so you don't have an insane piro rate...

I've tried flying without a gyro before and it was a handful.

I learned on a rebel 40 without a gyro but it was a fixed pitch heli. I didn't have the money for a gyro at the time. But I did learn and became very good at it. With my new found confidence, I went out and bought a collective pitch 30 and flew without a gyro. BIG MISTAKE!!!!. If your radio has a revo setting, than you can make it work. But I would suggest going with the gyro set up. It might be frustrating enough to chase you out of the hobby. Good luck

thats not what he was asking. He said "then I'll plug the gyro back in". He's just wanting to get it set up as perfect as possible mechanically. I think though that you would be fine just doing that in rate like everybody else does. I used to do it your way, but we only had rate gyros then!!!
