Now I've done it.

Had a high speed ground impact with my Century Swift 16 over the weekend. Pretty much destroyed the plastic head. Rotor head sheered in half.
I was due for a crash. You can view it here if you want...

So I have this full metal Century head that I had on my Century hawk. Well is is almost all metal. Need to use the Swift plastic swash for now. Did a quick hover test and it worked good.

Been running around 1975 headspeed so a metal head will be alot safer.

The only concern I have is last time I crashed the hawk with this head I tweaked the feathering shaft slightly. When I replaced it I put the red century dampners in the head. I was using some cheap nuts on the feathering shaft and stripped one of the nuts. The blade grips don't seem to turn very freely. The flybar doesn't bounce up and down freely like my other helicopters. The grips still move ok but not super smooth. Will this be an issue in flight? I have an extra feathering shaft I can put in the head.

I've tried using needle nose pliers to hold the stripped nut firmly and back off the good nut and no luck. What should I do to get this feathering shaft out? There is no space between the blade grip and rotor head to cut the feathering shaft there.

if you have some good tools

I got stuck like that once
drill into the side of the nut and continue through bolt or at least into it a good portion. find a 2 mm bit and 2mm allen wrench to put through the hole in the nut to hold the stripped nut on the shaft.

gently work on the good nut then pull the shaft through the bad side

hope this helps

What actually happened? It looks like the mecanics failed during the flight?

Not really sure what happened. I thought I dumb thumbed it. But it looks like the heli just dipped to the left and I couldn't get it right side up again. Couldn't find one of the swash to blade grip linkages. Maybe a link popped off. I've done many nose in landings.

Finally got that spindle out with the stripped nut. Got a large cut off wheel that was very thin. Cut a groove in the nut into the end of the spindle shaft. Screw driver didn't hold the shaft well and damaged the nut. Nut was damaged pretty good by then and was able to use a center punch and drive the spindle through the stripped nut.

Maybe a link popped off.

This has happened to me. It ended up being a mechanical set up. Full pitch plus full cyclic confirmed that it would pop those things right off.

That is why one should always do a bench test for any binding as the rotor turns.

a - go to full collective and swing the rotor so that it will turn. While it is turning, move the stick into the each corner for one complete 360 degree rotation. If the rotor "bumps" at all that means there is some link binding somewhere.

b - do the same with full negative stick

If there is any bumps, find out what is causing it and drop the amount of collective or cyclic so that it doesn't anymore.

^ bench test?

"semper"....however, even after bench testing, it can still happen just by being at that "max" threshold setting plus some stick banging or lack of collective management...ahem.

One other thing that I have done even with my planks is to pop them in backwards. However, there is a downside as it's not one of those things you can do more than a couple of times as it will enlarge the hole. So when and if it happens again (murphys law?), at least the "eye" will still be linked as it will most likely pop towards the neck of the ball instead and you will still have "some" control to bring here down...hopefully in one piece.
