I was reviewing his site, and through translated text on the Rigid section, I see he is calling for an 1850 headspeed saying that tailboxes are blowing up. Anyone heard about this? My XLE is running at about 2050 now and I would hate to have to slow it down.

Here is the translated text:

Therefore the tail rotor is quite highly translated with 1:5,1, so that one has still sufficient performance also with low rotor speeds. My flight tests resulted in that in the case of numbers of revolutions above 2000 rpm at the head the danger exist that the tail pipe begins to vibrate, which one hears clearly by a humming clay/tone. With badly balanced sheets it can come already in former times to it. Therefore my recommendation of 1850 rpm as maximum system number of revolutions. Who means, can now still more achievement of the system to take out to have that gladly over increased pitch angles make, from me up to 16 degrees pitch. Who means however, with high Drehzahlorgien herumballern to have and vibrating the entire tail rotor in purchase takes, must count on the fact that the tail rotor gear box says good-bye sooner or later.

Sounds like something is out of balance doesn't it?

Henseleit Headspeed

Guys,
this number (1850 Rpm) is in regards of the new TDR and not for the MP-E or th XL-E.
So, no worries.
Important regarding this matter:
At very high headspeeds which means also very high tail rotor speed the widely used stiff CF blades create vibrations and over time fatigue cracks, if used with metal grips.
Either softer blades or plastic grips are the solution.
But that should be common sense, since our tail rotors are spinning with 10K Rpm and more.

Cheers

Are the drive ratios different on the TDR compared to the MPXLE?

Ratio

The complete ratio between motor and head is 11.48 if you use a 13 teeth pinion.
There is a second stage in the main gear but this is not changeable and is 2.55 but is already included in the above completre ratio.
The ratio between head and tail is 5.1
