Safety - RC Helis are not toys > How far away from you do you fly your helicopter?

I've noticed at my field that a lot of guys will go and stand right at the edge of the landing pad and fly their helicopter right in front of them--passing maybe 15 feet away.

I have a hard time with orientation above me so I prefer to stand quite a ways back from the landing pad, but I am also concerned about safety.

How far away do you stand from your helicopter? Do you stand behind any barrier?

My club really doesn't have any barrier for the flyers to stand behind. I take off normally right in front of me but all manuevers that I do is done a good 50 feet away. I just don't see the need to do everything inches off the deck and right in front of my face. For one in doesn't interest me and two it is not real safe. Even if you have all the confidence in the world that you won't make a mistake, these are still machines with electronics and you never know. I use to fly pattern airplanes for many years which I guess has kind of followed me when I fly the helis. Oh well, I have fun and isn't that what the hobby is all about?

I take off and do basic hovering stuff about 15ft in front of me (stuff that I'm comfortable with). If I start flying around and doing 3D stuff, or stuff I'm not comfortable with, I'll move it at least to 50ft out.

It's hard to fly on the deck unless your real close because you need to see it. The "need" is the challenge, cmon are you kidding me?

I thought everyone yelled, "LOWER"!!!!

I fly about 15-20 feet out from where I stand and prefer high altitude, gives you time to correct. I never let the heli get directly above my head, almost crashed a few times because of orientation.

15-20 FEET here, but the distance is greater when I'm doing basic aerobatics due to the higher altitude. My hovering about is close enough to see, but far enough to make me think I'm safe - I mean 5 metres isn't much and even a 30 size nitro heli can fling a blade some distance. However, almost all fun things have an inherent risk.

I typically fly pretty far away, about 20 yards or more. During certain maneuvers I may bring it in closer like 10 yards or so.

I take off and land about 10 (450 size) to 20 feet (600 size) away. Then when I fly around, my 450 may use close to a soccer field, and my 600 maybe twice that.

I put the fun in dysFUNctional :)

my club doesn't have any flightline or a frequency board there are a few rules though
" don't fly over the road way
" don't chase/race cars on the roadway
" don't chase buddies with heli or planes
I keep my heli at a safe distance about 10 -15 feet away

Actualy it's just a lot backing over some farm land

I just fly around the house, aprox 20 feet up to 200 feet. any further and I get all nervous. I know I will inprove over time, but that is where I am right now.

There sure are a lot of 100' tall trees near by, seems like every where.

I do tend to keep it to within 100 yards, but largely because of orientation. If I go too far I do get scares when on occasion I momentarily loose the orientation of the chopper. I have flown it overhead, and yes it is disorientating. I always tend to add collective/throttle to be on the save side and notice as it has passed that it has gained a heck of a lot of altitude.

The real issue is safety.

If you have ever seen a heli explode in mid air. You don't want to be too close, as it usually throws stuff. I recently had a set of main blades on my Vibe 50 depart in flight, about six feet off the ground, it threw one of the blades over 100 feet(estimated).

I hover at about 30 feet and do circuits, very high (3 mistakes worth).

It is all about having fun, and being safe.

Since I lack the ability to do serious 3d, all my flying is, well, flying. I take up every inch of airspace. On average I would say I keep the 50 at least 50 feet away, and usually 100-200 feet to either side when doing circuits, 8s, loops, rolls and such. I never keep it at head high or lower. Usually 10 feet is about as low as I want to go.

I find myself flying the 450 the same distances, and it gets pretty small, but it is manageable. I fly alone alot, so my distances are more safe than trying stuff close in. I'm not obsessed with safety, but no need to stack the odds against me either...

my ciruits will get out 400 500 feet or further with my 700's and i will fly past within 15 feet and 3D i usually keep it 20 to 50 feet out.It does need to be close for 3D so you see what your doing but a little wiggle room for mistakes is good too.

To much power is never enough.
