I have recently aquired a used Gaupner 230 fuse with UNI mechanics minus the engine. I would like to install an O.S. 91 rear exhaust with a Century clutch assembly (PNs HI3010, Bell & HW3011, shoe). I would also like to install the new started fan that is directly installed on the engine. Question(s): Would all of the above be possible? Would I need a different Counter gear installed?? What would be the correct rear muffler to use? Part numbers would be greatly appreciated as well as all of the help.

Thank YOU in advance. Don in Indy

Hi Don,
most important question upfront:
WHICH Graupner UNI mechanics is it?
An Uni Expert? Or an Uni 2000?

The difference ist quite easy to see,
The Uni Expert has a black gearwheel at the bottom of the mainshaft
(ok, sometimes you see a "pro version", a mixture of red and brown),
but this wheel is always a single piece.
The Uni 2000 however has two wheels attached, one for the tail drive,
one for the main drive, and both of white color.

Here's an example for the Uni Expert:
http://www.rc-heli-fan.org/download...hp?id=40239&t=1

and the Uni 2000:
http://www.rc-heli-fan.org/download...hp?id=40240&t=1

Reason to ask: The gear drive of the Uni Expert series is simply too weak to stand a .90 engine.
Only the Uni 2000 was designed for up to .90 engines and their torque.
The Uni Expert was fine with .60 engines, but not more.

There was (maybe still is) an upgrade available, but it's quite expensive, price comes almost close to a new mech.

For the clutch assembly: I don't know the century parts, but one thing's for sure, the original clutch and cooling fan work simply perfect.
There's normally no need for those parts for any kind of upgrade.
(Aside from the fact that the original clutch assembly require an engine with the long 8 mm shaft, which you don't find that often any more.
There's one O.S. engine, the OS MAX 91 RZ-HG, see
https://shop.graupner.de/webuerp/servlet/AI?ARTN=2711
which would fit perfect.
Recommended silencer: something from Zimmermann (I'll try to locate one)
since the silencer recommended from Graupner:
https://shop.graupner.de/webuerp/servlet/AI?ARTN=2253
doesn't seem to be available any longer.

Edit: just surfed thru the century website; the parts you mentioned, HI3010 and HW3011 derive from a .30 mechanic, I don't believe that they would last too long on a .90 engine.
Also I'd doubt that those parts really integrate into the original gear drive, depending on the form and size of the teeth.
Original is Modul 1, 24 teeth.
You have to be a bit careful when selecting the correct gear transmission ratio, depending on what engine you finally choose.
If you want to, I can send you some considerations and thoughts that worked out when I installed a .91 OS on my Graupner Bell 230

Graupner

Thank you to everyone who has helped. Also... I appreciate any further information on this subject.

I am starting to understand why the guy at the IRCHA meet gave me such a good deal on his old 'project". He propbably did not want to fork out the big bucks to complete it.

He claimed over and over that this was a Century 60 mechanics... but I think he was meaning "in essence".

These mechanics DO NOT have any type of white gears at all. I do not want to pay the high price of an upgrade for either the mechanics or pay almost $500.00 for an O.S. engine.

Can anyone recommend a set of mechanics to go into this fuse??

And I would (enjoy) seeing what others have done with their Graupner projects.

Thanks again. Don

Hey Don,
probably "that guy at IRCHA" just got stuck with the project,
in terms of either the mechanic or the fuse requiring too much modifications.

What mechs would fit?
Obviously (and I apologize for that trivial answer), the Graupner mechs:
UNI Expert
UNI Expert 98
UNI 2000
UNI Elektro Skalar
and, as soon as available, the "Solid State".
The "Starlet 50" has the same dimensions as the systems mentioned above,
but it is designed (motor mounts and gear drive) for .50 size engines.
A .50 engine would be a bit small for the large Bell 230, and, same issue again, aside from the SolidState (not yet released) you'd need
an engine with the 8 mm long shaft.

For clarification on that strange "8 mm shaft":
The system works really well, the clutch uses ball-bearings, very precise and rock solid.
There used to be a special clutch version for 9.52 mm "standard" shafts, but its friction-type bearing was known to be a pain in the neck.

Which mechs certainly make no sense: anything with a belt tail-drive.
Although I didn't try it personally:
The Vario Skyfox could be an option (need to check),
perhaps the Vario Extreme.
Probably a Raptor 60 or 90?
Best Guess: Doable, with some extra effort.

hi,

it would probably be the best to get an used 60 engine with a Heim shaft on the german ebay, or go for electric motors.

As long as you are not doing 3d with it I can not see a problem putting that engine in those mechanics- providing you get the gear ratio correct.
