Just for the record,
I spotted for Raja twice at Ircha, and NEVER saw him do anything that looked even remotely dangerous. He sometimes got close to the 200ft. flight line mark in between the pilots air spaces, but so did almost every other pilot.

I'm allways right 97% of the time..............So who cares about the other 4%??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the issue with emmisitivity is that the metal actually reflects IR radiation from other things such that if you point the temp gun at a shiny muffler, you may actually be taking the IR temperature of the sun reflecting off it.

So the best way to make an IR gun work reliably is to paint a section of the motor matte black and then take the temperature measurement in absolute darkness. The approximate solution then would be to try and take the temperature measurement in the shade so that no direct sunlight reflects off it.

Many of the temp guns (or the slightly more expensive ones) have a thermister probe which will attach to the temp gun and take temperatures directly up to about 300F.

The IR radiation comes directly from the object you point the gun at. The sun would not reflect much IR off the muffler. The trouble with a shiny surface and a round object is that the IR will come off straight from the surface and miss the gun leaving only a very small area that the gun can actually see. A non shiny surface would come off diffuse. Imagine a glowing halo.

Paint is an insulator so that becomes a problem. IR is not visible so darkness has no effect. There are many wavelengths of IR and I am not sure what wavelengths these cheap guns are sensitive to.

Video

Cody if you can post the video link here it will be great. Wally went off the deep end over the other thread.

I went again to the field tonight and tried without success to find any heat rise with my gassers. Temp was cooler tonight, dropped to 56 degrees! In any case I tested the 1005 twice, and with each test I shut it down and ran to the heli as fast as I could and started searching for the hottest spot. I got 230 in the middle on the bottom, the top of the head was cooler. Then when I went back to the 230 spot like 5 seconds later it was already 225. I kept it there and waited and I saw 224, 223, 222 like that. I repeated this test again and tried it also with my Spectra with similar results.

All this is just a point that we're trying to test and prove with field results. I'm not sure why anyone has to get so upset about this who cares really, there are other things more troublesome in this world believe me. I did it to look for this heat rise that was always talked about but I can't find it with my tests.

Cody post the link to your video here once you have it and thanks.

I guess I don't really understand why we care about this heat sink concept anyways? Isn't the standard protocol to let the engine idle for a minute or two before takeoff to let it get to operating temperature, and then to let it idle for a minute or two after landing to let it cool? Problem solved, right?

I still want to see Cody do some hardcore 3D with the Wally 27cc motor. I'm not sure what to expect when I get my own Wally motor, but my biggest concern is that my Spectra will fly like a pig and won't be good for much. Even if the Wally motor is more powerful than the Hanson 3DMax, I'm concerned that all I'll be able to do is some figure 8's.

Maybe I should wait for the Wally 30cc motor next year?

Honestly, I've never seen a Spectra-G fly in real life. I've got a $3000 paperweight in my garage with no motor, and I have no idea what it will fly like when I finally get it together.

Can't find a Raja video at the moment, other than how to start a gasser, but have you seen this one..?

I couldn't find the Raja video, but I can safely say you have nothing to worry about. I don't see one pig in the bunch. They all do the trick.

Hands up on hot engines

How many owners of gassers are very concerned about this issue and why?How many of you have lost motors to this problem, rather than some other cause.Just interested to find out from other gasser owners especially camera ship operators, hard flyers.

..is to simplistic to point out that nay heli that can hover with symmetical blades can hover upside down.. and the right pilot with collective management skills can do the bit in between...

It's a shame that buying the heli doesn't make you into the pilot demo-ing it.

I'm actually more intrigued by these temp figures..even accepting some gun variances..perhaps I'm still running too rich.. mine rarely reads as high as 230 on that second fin exhaust side. I haven't documented but have seen temps rise slightly ...but just as possibly due to the fact that it's impossible to hold the laser dot still.. and after all we are looking for the hottest bit within the target zone. But then again I don't suppose I ever land as slick and fast as the gurus..it's probably cooled by the time I've got it down and hit the killswitch. Another case for in-flight recording.

PGK is correct in his comment about its not the heli that does the acrobatics its the pilots! You see so many times posts in other topics and forums from people wanting more and more power, the best blades and equipment and they just hover or fly circuits. Nothing wrong with buying the best but doesn't magically make you fly like a pro...

Anyway having had over 100 flights without engine problems, this topic has scared me into buying a IR thermometer. Yes I know they are only to use as a guide and that is what I shall be doing, but some arguments here are getting a bit beyond the point, unfortunately I don't have the money to be able to afford an F1 diagnostics team to be on hand every time I fly.

Raja maybe you could bottle your spit and sell it as a temperature indictaor

Hot engines

The reason i asked about hard flyers and camera ships is that the temps one would imagine would be higher, not anything to do with flying skill. If your camera ship is a heavy beast the engine would be working quite hard.Just interested to see if these heli,s suffer from major overheating problems that end in engine failure.Do you budget for an engine change after a few flights?

..asking the question, not being confrontational..

I can see why hard fliers would heat an engine, but so would lesser sports fiers..(poor management again)..whereas I'd expect camera ships to be tamed down for steadyness, lower headspeeds, poss longer blades, less drag...?

If I draw an example from my electrics then even fast sports flying with multiple flips will lower flight times and heat packs as indeed will a dodgy series of scarey recoveries. But if I double the packs up and fly sedate it's not such as issue....

..so I fly my beater electric 450 full bore and practice/learn/crash on a short timer, my 500 at middling headspeeds and get things neater with tepid packs and my 12S 600 can take anything that can be thrown at it because it's really designed to keep the heat down despite it's weightyness and overkill power reserves...
(and in answer to prevous comments about lipo costs... 2x4000mah 6s 20C at $60 each and I've got 6+mins flat out or 9+mins sedate with 4000watts motor and cool lipos at the end within the 20% rule... flat out with that and 6 mins is more than I could take anyway. Actually that's not true .. I bottled out at 2400 headspeed and 80% throttle and never tried it higher)

The thing is

The point i am trying to make and not wanting to start any arguements,is there are a lot of things especially if you are new to gassers that are very important in the set up.I wonder sometimes standing back for a moment if things about owning a gasser can appear very negative to a newbie. Some of the posts seem to dwell on issues that are not really a big problem in the day to day ownership of a gasser. To me the set up is the all important factor and there is a lot of common advice from experienced flyers here that does not conflict. When you have owned and flown a gasser for a while everything will slot into place and i think most will enjoy and for the most part(compared with any other heli) are very reliable.

Maybe we get a little paranoid about our gassers because of the high costs of failure?

It isn't nice crashing any helicopter, but sticking one of these in the ground hurts, does this make us fanatical and obsessive about everything.

My nitro I just wind it up and thrash it to the best of my ability, yes I still check it, yes I observe engine temperatures (with my finger) but it works great!

Thanks for the video posts. I'm not too impressed with the Vario and the Predator is OK, but that Russian guy's Spectra looks pretty peppy. I guess the Hanson motor is pretty powerful, huh? I suppose that guy's Spectra is running an 8oz tank to save weight and he doesn't have a Jewel which would save another few ounces?
