He stripped his main gear. He's been having that problem ever since he got that over powered monster.

Yeah its not surprising considering that motor could probably be used to power a scooter and push around a 200 pound guy(with a gear ratio though). The motor has crazy power but is its really big.

The main gear is different from the stock gear and looks to be 3x thicker and is made of a reinforced plastic. The gear mod is 1 or something bigger than the stock TREX 700 gear.

Does anyone know the RTF weight of that heli?

I did see it in person and he flew a full flight when I was around. The heli was amazingly powerful and he did a great job showing what the heli could do with that type of power.

Wonder if putting in a metal reduction gear between the motor and main gear and shrinking the main gear to make room for it would work.
That or running a belt between the reduction gear and main.

A toothed belt off the motor would probably strip the teeth if it
were direct driving the main gear, need a bigger pulley to wrap the belt around and get more bite.

So maybe a metal-metal 2:1 reduction and then a larger, 20 tooth pulley to drive a smaller main gear.

Crazy idea, single planetary set and a direct drive to the mainshaft
with the motor directly under the shaft.

A custom brushless motor could direct drive the mainshaft, it would probably be more than 3 phase and be almost as big in diameter as the main gear, but much flatter than current motors. A 'pancake' design.

I've been surprised that I haven't seen planetary gear sets in electric helis yet. Seems to be a near perfect application.

James,
My Duzi R5 Nova has a planetary gear drive system, and it is really sweet. A bit expensive though!

Hey Guys,

That sound you hear in that video is indeed the Main
Gear stripping. It is a mod 1.0 15mm tall Gear, VS 10mm Stock mod 0.7 The Gear in that video was made of Glass filled Black Nylon. It is right on the edge of holding up to 11+HP peaks (8200 Watt peaks) however as you can see its still not adequate. I also have The same Gear made out of a Kevlar filled Nylon, it has better self lubricating properties, and also much higher Tensile Strength. If anyone stuck around at IRCHA and saw some of the flights I put on that Gear, you know it does not strip. Ive got approximatly 20-25 flights on the same Kevlar filled Nylon Gear, with out incident. Which is unprecedented with this much power, and the current Gear Train Design.

Ready to fly weight on this machine with, Castle ICE 160HV, 50-35 Vertigo motor, 6s 5000mah Thunder Power 45C's, 2s 2100mah Reciever pack is at 11lbs 15Oz. I realize this is a bit on the Heavy side, but when you consider the fact that you've got up to 11HP peaks, thats nearly 1 pound per horsepower. Couple that with a Fybarless rotor head and the machine feels far from too heavy in flight. Thats why its now commonly referrred to as "The BEAST" A fitting name if you ask me.

Timing is Everything

Im sorry but that aint 11 HP going through the system. I been hearing a few things about the CC . a friend of mine ran the ice 100 and it said it hit 140 amps on his trex 600 on 6S, put a Kontronics and another amp meter and it hit the normal 80 amps like most, I dont know what CC is doing to calibrate their controllers . but to me this is false advertising. a sharp spike to 11 hp is unusable info to me. Its so sharp and so fast it aint ganna show up to the head as 11 hp. 11 HP and the rex or any machine cant handle a true 11 HP of this size. I sat back and watched MA root and holler about hitting 6000 watts in there Ion, looking at the video back then with the 1Ps just came out, that wattage was useless to me.
thats good power but most of that 11 HP peaks are bogging
