I saw the night flying at IRCHA this year and the lights used were awesome. Were the ultra bright LEDs used on most of them an off the shelf item or a custom setup? I have never had good depth perception at night but the visibility on these were great. I have been wanting to try night flying and now I definitely want to try it.

my question is why was the majority of the night flyers flying nitro machines and not electric? I was thinking about turning my 600esp into a night bird but now considering my 600nsp.

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

Are the xerogear lights really that bright? Several of the helis lit up the ground and one (Nick Maxwell's I think) had ultra bright white leds on the tail boom.

Chance is a great guy. We had a good "discussion" about brightness at IRCHA. If you run his lights on the rated 12v (3S lipo) they are ridiculously bright. To me, at a distance they make the machine tough to see, like a glowing fireball. I think this is what Nick was running his white boom at.

I made the night rig for Kyle Stacy, using Xerogear on the tail and vertical fin with glow wire on the canopy.

Ended up running the fin directly off a 2S, but the boom had a diode to drop the volts below 7.

I must admit I'm getting to like the LED's, but be careful combining with glow wire or dim blades as they get washed out.

I've been running xerogear on my Trex 500 since early this year. I run them off of a 2S Lipo, a 3S is just too bright to me.

Thanks guys. I had no idea the xerogear ones were so bright. Of course I'd never seen them in person, only pictures. The price isn't too bad either.

And Chance is a nice guy. Not to mention he has a very good product. He also sells a dimmer for the Xerogear if you are interested which allows you to vary the brightness.

I like the glow wire setups myself so that it doesnt look like a big glowing blob at distance. My biggest problem is the LED's on my Futaba 10C being stupidly bright at night and right in my face. I wish we could add one little bit to the software so I could turn those off from a menu instead of having to tape over them.

Now there's a first!
Perhaps you can cut and apply some limo tint over the LED? Won't bend over a compound angle but it might work.

What impressed me the most is how they could turn on and off the lights or change colors at will. Were they doing it or someone else for them?

Please don't ask if I worked or flew today....I would not like to lie to you

I believe that some did it themselves and some had a second person helping.

it sure was in impressive show. I wish XeroGear would have stuck around after the night fly and I would probably have a night bird.

yeah me too. I about to start a night setup for my trex 700 but have no idea what I am doing. I only have one bird so I am going to have to switch back and forth. However I have an extra canopy I can dedicate to and with night mains and tail will only have to route the tail boom and fin. We will see eyes are peeled on this thread
