This afternoon I think I used up a years worth of luck (or more). I was charging up packs and gear for a day of flying tomorrow. I brought my LiPo charger out into the garage to charge some heli packs and my starter. I started charging one of the 4s, 2350 LiPos for my starter and headed into the backyard to do some work. The charger and battery were on the concrete floor but relatively close to my truck. About 15 minutes later as I was dragging the hose around the front of the house I heard several 'pops'. I immediately looked around hoping to see some neighborhood kids goofing around with something. No kids..no one around. A couple more pops and I was sprinting into the garage. No fire, charger still charging, no alarms...opened the door into the house... no problems... and then more noise behind me.

I yanked out the power to the charger and fumbled around trying to unplug the charger and balancer from the pack. Now the pack was hissing and popping and having seen vids of LiPo fires I knew what was about to happen. I put the starter with the LiPos - I had two 4s LiPos on this starter - on the driveway and tried to figure out the fastest way to get my Dynatron detached from these packs. Finally managed to unscrew the lower plate holding the two batteries, but no time to get the batteries seperated. The hissing pack ignited. I watched it burn for a couple seconds then decided to try to get some pictures of this. Ran into the house and the first camera I found had a low battery..that figures. Ran back out and checked the fire - and was amazed at the blow torch that comes out of these batteries. I finally found my other camera, but I missed the most impressive part of the burn.

I can't believe how close this was to a real mess. Thinking about the situation, I realize I ignored a couple of hints that something was going wrong. Recently the charger 'faulted out' a couple times with a warning. I unplugged the charger and balancer, reconnected and the pack seemed to charge normally. I thought that the balance connector may have been an issue because some of those connectors get a loose feel after a while. I'll be sending the charger back to the manufacturer for repair or replacement, however I will be much more careful of how and where I charge any LiPo. Thought I should post this just as a reminder. I've seen and heard all the warnings and I've been using LiPos for 5 years and never had an issue - until today.

Well, you did get lucky. Have you considered charging your batteries while they are in a metal container or a fire proof container?

Your lucky you got it outside thats for sure. As I always say I will stick with my nicads and nimh for my starter. I myself have no use for any lipos at all and am glad for that. Seen this happen way way to many times even on packs that a charger didnt give any warnings.

I had been thinking of a fireproof setup. I will definitely do that now! I do store my LiPos in ammo boxes. I may buy another ammo box and drill it to accept the charger leads. The problem with a lot of chargers is the balance lead is rather short so you almost need to put the charger and the battery into the box. I have a LiPo bag which I usually use for charging. If I had been following recommendations, I would have removed the batteries from the starter. Then I could have put the pack in the LiPo bag. I like the idea of a metal box or some type of ceramic 'container'. Anyone make or see a nice fireproof charging setup?

I think the cells use lithium ions and not lipos. A little more stable, but still can catch on fire. Even nicads and nimhs can catch on fire.

The charger charges LiPos at 1C. So in the case of this battery about 2.3A. The balancer was connected. I always use the balancer when charging a LiPo. As far as the charger, I would rather not mention the make other than to say it was a name brand charger. It was not a cheapo, no-name import. I've had the charger for 1 1/2 to 2 years and it has always worked fine until recently. I ignored the warning signs when the charger faulted a couple times recently. I should have investigated further. After the barbecue was finished, I did plug in the charger to confirm the last charge settings - they were correct for the battery - 4s, 2350mah.

you might look into those lipo safe bags if you are still concerned. They are usually very nice

Betcha they dont!!! I do not own a lap top have no need for one nor do I own a cell phone I am retired why on earth do I want people calling me for? As I have stated I have no use for lipos and am glad I dont. They had a lot of laptops bursting into flames due to defective batterys have heard of a couple of cell phones but never seen anything on the news abotu a cell phone going up on its own like these lap top batteries were. As far as hobby items For me I do not need or desire to have anything that needs a lipo its just me dont need nor want them. Nicads and nimh doe what I need just fine. Not downing lipos or people who use them I just dont need or want them is all.

no, laptops and cell-phones use Lithium Ion batteries.

Lithium Ion batteries are far safer than Lithium Polymer batteries, though they have about 20% less charge capacity.

LiIons are in metal cans because they are far more reactive than LiPolys, LiIon are used in laptops because the energy to volume ratio is higher. LiPolys are used in Helis because the energy to weight ratio is better, mostly because there is no metal can.
But if you mistreat a LiIon it will blow up even more spectacularly than a LiPoly, more like burning magnesium than lighter fluid.

i am curious to what brand lipos they were ? did they have a 1 amp recharge rate ? some of those cheaper ones do. maybe 2amps was to much. i have never had one light off had them puff last one the rotor blade went through 3 cells of a 6s pack and nothing but white smoke had a align pack get poped open and no fire getting a little disappointed just kiddin glad u saved ur starter and equipment oh and most of all ur house. the ammo can is great just keep lipo inside and be able to disconnect and toss out the window incase of smoke i dont put any thing but batt in the box as if it goes i want to salvage my balancer and dean lead

charging container

Just use cement block with the 3 holes in it one hole for each lipo and use fire proof top and bottom. Dave Mann

Just to prevent for the house and my collection of helicopters to burn up, when I charge li-po batteries, I use an old ceramic crock-pot insert and lid. I hope that will contain the fire !!![quote]

We built a bunker like the one in this video after we nearly lost half our garage from a LiPo fire.

I never had a lipo go but had a 4.8 nimh pack explode due to a bonehead mistake. I was using one of those multi-connector output cables http://www.helidirect.com/maxpro-mu...able-p-9112.hdx to charge the nimh pack on my Hyperion Duo charger. Well I went to charge a lipo using the another connector on the cable whilst forgetting to unplug the nimh pack. about 15 minutes into the charge cycle I hear hissing sounds so I think the lipo is about to go but to my suprise before my eyes the nimh pack is bulging and hissing, a few seconds later it explodes and sends a piece of shrapnel through the wall (drywall). What a close one, that could have hit me.
