e-BEAM Beam E4 > Throttle pitch curve

Hi everybody !

I'm writing from Switzerland, so please excuse my approximate english ;-)

I'm a newbie in rc electric heli and I have a beam 450.

It's the first heli I built (I have an axe 400 RTF for my first heli to learn the basics...)

Somebody in a rc shop has made my heli setup because I had no idea how to set it up...

My throttle curve is 50% at mid stick with 86% pitch at mid stick too...
Is it appropriate ? I have bought a scorpion 2221-6 with a scorpion commander 70 ESC, and my esc at the end of the flight (hovering only) is quite hot... Is it normal ?
I must add the heli fly great. (4 flights and I must say I'm amazed by this machine !)

In fact it seems that this motor is very powerful, is that right ?
It could explain why they set my heli with only 50% throttle and 86% pitch at mid stick...

Thank you very much for answering me !!!! :-)

Hi

Scorpion ESC's version 1 (I don't know how about V2) get very hot even if you are just hovering. Those aren;t very good controllers...by my opinon. I had 2 and I sold them...
-6 motor is the most powerfull motor for 450 so is sucks a lot of current. But 70A ESC it too much,55A or even 45A ESC will work fine.

I can't tell you much about your curves beacause all depends of pinon what ur using and your pitch range. It will be better that you set you throttle vurve closer to ~80% because BLDC motor are more efficient at this point.

I hope I could help, english isn;t my native language also so I think you'll understand me well

Ufoman, welcome to the Beam family!
English is my native language so if you need me to explain something better, please let me know.

Are you using only normal mode?
What is your flight experience.
What pinion are you running?
I have only been flying for 1 year but;
With a throttle curve at 50% and pitch at 85% mid stick, you may be bogging down the motor causing it to run harder and pull more amps. This can cause things to run hotter than normal.

I would run about 50% (or about 0 pitch) at mid stick. If you have a pitch gauge (and you do need one) I would set the blade pitch in normal mode to -2 degree at mid stick.

Throttle curve is fine at 50% mid stick but you will change it when you start with throttle up. My throttle curve in throttle up (flight mode 1) is 100-75-100. Since I am at 75% mid stick in throttle up, I set my throttle curve to 75% mid stick in normal mode. When I flip the switch from normal to throttle up during flight, the motor does not change speed.

The -6 is a powerful motor, I use a -8. It gives more flight time but both are great motors.

Why did they set 50% throttle and 86% pitch mid stick?

Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Thank you for your answers !!

I've only flown my beam 4 times in normal mode. But it was great. Very stable, precise, exceptional from my opinion :-)

My flight experience is... I'm almost a beginner.. I've been flying the Helimax axe 400 3D for six months approximately and I'm beginning forward flight but I'm still afraid to put the heli nose in. In short as long as the heli is nose out everything is ok ;-)

I'm running 11 tooth pinion.

The motor is not bogging at all.. it seems to run fine. I think the people who set up my beam have concluded that for a beginner like me less headspeed = better LOL
so that's probably why they set my radio with low throttle and high pitch at mid stick...

so in summary I think from what you said that I should decrease the pitch at mid-stick right ? (assuming they have set up my pitch range from -11 to +11 as the manual say..)

Yes.

I am guessing that they set it up with 50% throttle and 85% pitch because there is no exponential set in your transmitter. They thought that the faster head speed was too hard to control. If there are expo setings available in your transmitter, read on. If not, the setup you have should be fine for now.

I would set pitch to zero at mid stick (about 50%) and increase throttle to about 70-75% mid stick. With an 11 tooth pinion you may find that the Beam is even more stable with increased head speed but make sure to add some exponential in aile and elev. I would set the expo somewhere between +25 and +40 for both aile and elev. With expo, the higher the number = softer feel around mid stick. It does not limit servo movement, it makes the servos around mid stick not as fast.

If you increase the throttle curve, decrease the pitch and make sure you have some expo set for aile and elev, you should have a nice setup.

I have 2 Beams, in one I run 25% expo and the other I run 40% expo. They have different servos and different servo arm lengths. That is the reason for the difference.

Setup is a personal thing. Not all setups work for everyone.

Do you want me to post my setup so you can compare?

Understood !! Thank you very much mongenix for your detailed answers !!

I'll try it next time I fly !

If you don't mind I have another question ;-)

I have currently around 9 minutes flying time. If I increase throttle I guess it will undoubtedly reduce flying time ?
Because at the beginning when you're learing it's nice to fly as long as you can ;-)

Again thank you very much :-)

Yes it will reduce flight time. It is nice to fly as long as you can but if you start out with a setup that is close to what you will end up with, you may not develop habits that do not work when you change your settings for sport flying.

What batteries are you using?
If they are 2200mah LiPo's, make sure you are not over discharging your batteries.

I fly for 6 mins only. I do not fly 3D but I do loops, rolls, flips, fast forward flight, inverted hover and other sport flying in throttle up most of the flight.

When I fly this weekend, I will set a Beam up with 50% and 85% to see what you are flying. I have never tried these settings and I will post back what I think.

OK ! :-)

I have 2200 mah and I never let the batteries below 10V, usually 10.6 to 11V.

So I think that with my setup I've 2-3 min more flight time, but I've flown only in normal mode for the 4 flights I've done with my beam...

For example, these days I fly almost exclusively my axe 400 3D, always in idle up (100-85-100) with a 3500 kv motor.
I'm less nervous because it's a RTF, plastic parts etc ;-)
but a very good heli for the money !

Have a nice day and I hope to hear from you soon !!

Note: if you happen to use Futaba radio gear then negative (-) expo decreases sensitivity around center stick.

Just thought I would mention that. Futaba and JR/Spektrum exponential is reverse from each other
