My Posts This: Topic Forum | My son Kyle Dahl (Team Mikado) will be traveling to Germany in Sept. to compete in the Munich Heli Masters, which is conducted with the F3N format. It will be our first exposure to the format. I believe the format is still a provisional event with the FAI.
The organizers have modified the format slightly, in that one of the freestyle rounds will be set to music. This makes it very similar to the 3D Masters format, which includes mandatory maneuvers picked by the pilot from a published list, freestyle flights (no music), and flights set to music.
Although everyone's not in agreement on this, we think the format tests all the skills of the modern 3D pilot. The mandatory maneuvers test the pilots pure technical skills (which many "smack down" 3D pilots never learned), the music tests his ability to be creative and daring, but because the beat of the music is fixed, he must constantly be at a point in space and at a point in time throughout the flight (tough to do well). And the freestyle flight allows for maximum craziness, since he can fly purely for effect, without having to be "technically correct" (i.e. maneuvers centered, entry/exit altitudes identical etc.), and no music choreography to constrain him.
Personally, I hope the format becomes the standard.
Take care, Dave Dahl
