How do you know when your clutch is going bad. Also who relines them or how do you do it.

If you don't have any hot starts expect the clutch liner to last about 400 flights. I had my liner replaced at 400 flights due to the clutch enguagement getting higher than expected.

As I type my clutch is in the mail coming back from Minair. I had it overhauled at 735 flights as the bearings got shot and it started making some noise and the bell was wobbling on the shaft. I had Bob put in some new bearings (not all were needed), a new shaft, and replace the liner anyways since I expected it to be 65 flights from needing a new liner. Bob did measure the liner and he said it was within tolerance but getting close to the edge of being worn. I said I know, in 65 flights it would have been probably due, so please replace it now while you have it.

My flights are 15 to 20 minutes each, average I'd say at least 15 minutes. Just saying so you know its about 100 hours life on the liner(400 flights) and about 175 hours on the bearings.

Cost

$45, but it depends on what they replace in your clutch should you send it in for service.

I think you can get just the liner and glue it in yourself too. I remember doing it on my xcell 30 a long time ago. I will say it was kind of tight after I did it so the blades wanted to turn at an idle but I could hold them from turning.

JB Weld is magic .....

MA clutch liners are a tad oversize, as mentioned above , it's not a big job to turn it down or even use sandpaper ....

I used a shade tree mechanic lathe. I used a 1 1/4" craftsman socket with 220 sticky sand paper neatly cut and wraped around the socket. That was a perfect fit to cut about 8 thousands off. I attached it to my drill and slowly sanded the clutch liner to dimention (clutch liner by itself not in clutch bell). I checked it periodically inside the clutch bell for proper tolerances (6-7 thous). Once I achieve proper dimension, I cleaned the clutch bell and sanded the outer liner and JB Welded the two in place. I then placed electrical tape around the actual clutch and pushed it into the liner so it will make sure the liner is fitted to the clutch bell wall and that the JB Weld has cured. After it cured, I took the electrical tape off and could not tell the difference from factory or shade tree fixed.

I then placed electrical tape around the actual clutch

How much? A single layer of tape? How did you splice the ends so there'd be no gap or overlap wile the JB Weld cured?

I forgot to add, I had to bend the clutch shoes back to their original state. Just line up the body line (clutch) and shoe line (clutch) parallel with each other. It does not take much to bend it back into position. Make sure you do this before you proceed with sanding and fitting the clutch liner and the steps below.

Once I put JB on the the outside of the clutch liner and also on the clutch bell, I slide the clutch liner into the clutch bell. I used black electrical tape and wrapped it only once ( 1 layer) around the actual clutch. I forced the clutch with the liner/clutch bell down with the tape surrounding the clutch. It was not much of a force, just a little pressure. This purpose was to apply pressure on the clutch liner to adhere to the clutch bell. The tape served as a displacement for the 6-7 thousands of an inch space. After 16 to 20 hours (JB dry time), pull the clutch assembly apart and take the black tape off. Put the clutch assembly back together and you will have a perfect factory fit. No drag or anything. The clutch will engauge at the proper RPM. There is no Lathe needed to change your clutch liner.

Note for confusion: The black electrical tape was only used as a buffer between the clutch and the clutch liner/bell housing to force the clutch liner up against the bell housing wall. This would ensure that the liner was true all the way around and fastened.

Further note: Make sure you check the buffer before you glue. You may need to sand a little more. If you sanded a little too much, add a second layer of tape as a buffer.

This method will save you about 50 bucks!!!

Thanks for the detailed description, woody37. I have no hands-on experience with relining clutches.

I have seen a number of previous descriptions for the procedure, some of those included the black electrical tape, but those that did specifically include the number of layers or the actual desired gap were for the Raptor heli, and I suspected that the recommended gap in that case (two layers, 0.01" or 0.25mm gap) would not apply to our gassers.

Thanks again.

I used the Miniature Aircraft 121-21 Heavy Duty Clutch liner. I don't think anything else will work.

I've done it a few times and if i have to i would pay $100 not to have to do it again. Mine was always to tight and one time slung slam out the heli. I't takes a dummy to sell a heli with out the liner already instailled.
